Product Description

In this highly acclaimed series, Gavin Stamp embarks on the most romantic, glamorous railway journey in the world - all the way across Europe to the edge of Asia. His adventures on and off the train are punctuated by Stamp's candid reflections on life, architecture, history and the countries he visits. The result is hugely entertaining. Stamp's journey takes in Paris, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Transylvania, Bucharest and Istanbul. From the director of 'The Naked Pilgrim', also available on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Travel Documentary 18 Jan 2008
By kd001
I watched this series on TV and loved it. The Orient Express itself is only shown in the first episode though this was in my opinion sufficient and it was very interesting to see a journey on the restored 1930s carriages. Gavin Stamp actually follows the original Orient Express route across eastern Europe (which the current Venice-Simplon Simplon Orient Express does not follow) so from Vienna onwards he uses various passenger trains. The series concentrates mainly on the architecture at the various places visited (with some insight into local history and culture as well) but this was very interesting. Gavin Stamp is a great presenter and gives sufficient information without boring the viewers. I thought this was a lot better than Michael Palin's New Europe (also about Eastern Europe) because with this you actually get to see the historical sites at the various places. Definitely recommended to anyone with even a slight interest in architecture or the history of Eastern Europe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and surprisingly funny 1 April 2008
Saw this originally on TV and thought it was the best "travel" programme of the year, alongside Paul Merton's China series. Aside from providing interesting insights into countries and areas we dont hear much about, Gavin Stamp is also a hilariously grumpy and snobby travelling companion. His tantrum about having to use a bus, and therefore go to a bus station, was priceless. Recommended on a number of levels!

5.0 out of 5 stars Grumpy, opionated and interesting 31 July 2008
By MarkE
Having seen the original series on TV and thought it was something I would want to see again more than once I bought the DVD. If you have not seen the TV series, Stamp travels the route of the old Orient Express to Istanbul, stopping regularly to look at interesting (for various reasons) architecture.

Like many DVDs of TV series this is simply a compilation of the programmes transmitted so, if you watch it in a short space of time, the introduction that is perfectly acceptable once a week become boring. That however is the only thing I would criticise here. Until I read the biography on the DVD I knew nothing about Stamp, but I found him an enjoyable guide to the architecture covered in the series. He holds very strong opinions on his subject and is equally willing to express them; I don't believe his views match those of the architectural establishment, and that is no bad thing.

With his strongly held and clearly stated opinions, and his willingness to depart from the accepted view, it came as no surprise that this came from the same production company as Brian Sewell's two series; Naked Pilgrim and the Grand tour.
