Dick Gaughan remains one of the most highly respected folk singers in the United Kingdom. He is also one of the most sought-after artists and commits himself to gruelling tours, both in the UK and abroad, particularly North America and Australia. Dick has been appearing at The Trades Club, Hebden Bridge in North Yorkshire for years and it is always his last gig in his November/December tour of the UK. A live album will generally "find out" the studio fraud, the technically enhanced musician or singer. The best thing I can say about this live album is that Dick Gaughan proves to new and old listeners that his talents are pure and honest and that favourites from his studio work grow in front his audience. He is bravely willing to push the very technical aspects of his guitar playing further and to experiment freely with his unique singing voice. If you have Gaughan albums and want to hear old songs developed or are looking for something by way of introduction to his work, buy this one!!

Those who think this is "Gaughan at his best" can not have heard the man when his repertoire was still alive and vital. This set is pretty much what you'll have heard at every Gaughan gig for the past decade. He apparently can't be bothered to learn new songs or relearn the better ones from his past. Unfortunately, the choices he's made in the last couple of decades have provided ever diminishing returns.
Buy "Handful of Earth" if you're curious to hear him at something closer to his prime.
