Here is the missing link in Essential Oil literature, the first modern work written by the man who coined the word 'Aromatherapy.'
In July 1910 René- Maurice Gattefossé discovered the healing properties of lavender oil after severely burning his hands in a laboratory explosion. This led him into a lifetime of research into Essential Oils.
His remarkable book was first published in 1937 and has been out of print for many years. Now translated, it has been edited by Robert Tisserand, author of three books on aromatherapy (including the best-seller, The Art of Aromatherapy), editorial adviser of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine and editor of The International Journal of Aromatherapy.
The book is a fascinating blend of ancient and modern knowledge and aromatherapists will find it an essential tool of reference. Extensive notes are provided by Robert Tisserand at the back of the book.
Chapters include those on human smells and animal smells, toxicity, the properties of essential oils and their constituents, the treatment of many diseases, and over fifty case studies from doctors.

Gattefosse's Aromatherapy,
By Lynda Lison "Happee Ali" (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gattefosse's Aromatherapy (Paperback)
I bought this book for interests sake. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of information about the Essential Oils and have found it useful for my course of studies in Aromatherapy (City&Guilds Level 3).
It has some history, chemical constituents, properties, human trials research notes, recipes and other information. A very good buy indeed!

Interesting Diary of use from one of the "founders" of modern aromatherapy,

An interesting read although a lot of the information is somewhat dated. It provides history and diary examples on how essential oils have been used in the early 1900's.
More of a historical read than a useful day to day reference in my opinion.

An essential reference tool for aromatherapists,
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Gattefosse's Aromatherapy (Paperback)
With so many books on aromatherapy available, it's difficult to know what's really valuable. The authors of so many books have few medical or scientific credentials and take a highly impressionistic approach. For this reason alone, to find a book like this written by a chemist is a rare treat. And, since this is a chemist writing in 1936, we find the source of much of today's common knowledge of the discipline - from the man who made it a discipline and coined the word 'aromatherapy'. Translator Louise Davids and editor Robert Tisserand offer us a natural-reading translation with the added benefit of an editor's introduction which places the book in its historical context. Tisserand points out that "as a chemist Gattefosse was not a part of the natural therapy movement and he did not share [today's] holistic, 'alternative' approach." That comes as a great relief to those of us who want some reliable chemical basis for our choices of oils. Even more useful are the copious notes Tisserand provides throughout the book, sometimes to explain terminology, more often with comments on Gattefosse's observations in the light of today's knowledge.

After reading this book, I felt like I could better understand aromatherapy. It is very descriptive, and easy to follow.
