Biography

As one of Britain's most innovative and celebrated composers, Michael Nyman's work encompasses operas and string quartets, film soundtracks and orchestral concertos. Far more than merely a composer, he's also a performer, conductor, bandleader, pianist, author, musicologist and now a photographer and film-maker. Although he's far too modest to allow the description 'Renaissance Man', his restless… Read more in Amazon's Michael Nyman Store

Amazon.co.uk Review

All through this chilling depiction of a possible future, there's a sad sense of something lost, something forgotten. Family means little anymore, and you struggle to see where there's any joy in the characters' lives. Instead of "futuristic" music playing up the environment or technology, Nyman introduces two elements that focus on the story: first is a sense of sorrow. "The Morrow" immediately introduces this with adagio strings. A sub-plot involves sibling rivalry, portrayed by a secondary motif ("The One Moment") that also makes its mark via the string section, resolving ultimately in a rousing reprise at "The Other Side". The other aspect of the score is what made Nyman ideal for the job: he composes in cyclic cells. In chasing its own tail the music gives a complete statement of the not-so brave new world. To borrow the film's phonetic punning, it's a mournful work of gene-ius. --Paul Tonks

Michael Nyman's music for Gattaca is a worthy follow-on from the haunting music he provided for Jane Campion's film The Piano. Concentrating mainly on a string orchestra for Gattaca, I loved the fluidity of this music, intoxicating in its relentless beauty, evoking fear, tension and calm by turns.

Normally I don't review/rate music (I do review products on amazon.de though), because I think music is very much based on personal opinions, emotions and last but not least taste.

Why am I making an exception here? First of all, because the soundtrack could not fit any better to the movie. Not ANY better! Every scene, every emotion in the film is multiplied in its intensity by this beautiful soundtrack. Especially the main theme "The Morrow" has an incredible kind of tragic, melancholic, yet beautiful touch. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Secondly, added, the soundtrack nearly tells a story by itself. Just close your eyes and listen to it. And third part of why I gave it 5 stars is the technical one: the music by itself is brilliantly produced, played and recorded.

Nothing to add. Just listen to it on very good speakers, get a glass of wine first and later close your eyes.

I first watched 'Gattaca' on video back in the 90's and was greatly impressed by what an excellent and intelligent film it was. This soundtrack is truly worthy of the film. It made an enormous impact on me when I first heard it and still does. One of, if not THE, best film soundtracks that I have ever heard.
