Product Description

A novel of San Francisco.

On the eve of the fortieth anniversary of the Summer of Love, Helen and Frank Connor arrive in San Francisco to determine the fate of their marriage. A series of unexplainable events sends the couple in separate directions deep into the ghosts of the City’s past, which include the fierce, fiddle-playing Elle, who accidentally jumped to her death in 1967 and is now back to reclaim her lost instrument, pulling along with her all the men who stopped their lives for her.

This ensemble novel is peppered with classic San Francisco characters like Remmy X, an old hippie poet who publishes a daily paper on his old Remington; Brian, haunter of the City Lights Bookstore, who fell in love with Elle in 1967; Penny Lane, the drag queen of North Beach; and Shep, Remmy’s faithful dog. Gathering Lights is a ghost story of five souls suspended in the amber of their grief, and it will have you believing in the power of love and music to change both the past and the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuine Delight! 20 Sept. 2013
By Michaela - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Laraine Herring has given us a gem of a novel at once beautifully-wrought and impossible to put down. Here we discover stories woven with other stories in a dance of love and longing--all circling around the haunting music of Elle, the free-spirited, fiddle-playing hippie girl.

In Gathering Lights, San Francisco itself is a character, enigmatic and enchanting. This place where magic feels possible is a meeting ground for the other characters--Remmy X, the street poet, and Helen and Frank, who while just visiting the city, are irresistibly pulled into its mix.

Having taken this remarkable journey once just isn't enough. I can't wait to read this book again!
5.0 out of 5 stars Herring does it again! 15 May 2014
By M. Hughes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Laraine Herring is the author of one of my all time favorite books on writing ("The Writing Warrior"), but I had not read any of her fiction works until now. No surprise, she is as gifted a storyteller as she is a teacher of the craft of writing. I haven't been to San Francisco in over 20 years, but reading this gorgeously written and brilliantly fashioned tale of love, loss, art and music made me feel like I was right there in the heart of the city once again. This book will take you on a journey that you'll find yourself hoping will never end...can't recommend it highly enough!
5.0 out of 5 stars Another outstanding book from a great author 23 Jan. 2014
By Dean K Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another fascinating read from Ms. Herring. San Francisco is layered around the lives of interesting characters (one of the dead) and the woman who has seen the ghost. A Husband and wife trying to end or save their marriage, old friends and lovers intertwined and roaming the city weave a great story in one of the most storied cities. A definite must read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Get on board for a trip to San Francisno 15 Jan. 2014

Ms. Herring not only uses San Francisco in 1967 and 40 years later as her setting, I believe she has channeled the city into her story. The five souls who are her characters are original and delightful. A fresh and fanciful ghost story filled with thoughtful magic.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book captures the magic of San Franciso 19 Nov. 2013
By Ann L. Lindstrom - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I do not review books often, but this book needs to be discovered. The human (and ghost) characters are well defined and interesting. The story moves well and I was never lost or bored. However for me the main character was the city of San Francisco. Ms Herring captures well the sense of the present and the past interacting there, in this case the summer of love and the city forty years later. She takes both to the city the tourists see, and to the city off the beaten path. She captures the unique atmosphere of a city that accepts differences, and is willing to share its magic.

I am usually hesitant to read self-published authors. While I have friends who are self published and have wonderful books, much of the self-published world needs a good editor and tighter plots. I did not find find the same faults in this book.
