This book was far better than I expected. Based on Magic:The Gathering? I was expecting dross, but was pleasantly incorrect.
The story is set during the period of The Dark (the card set), after the apocalyptic Brothers' War, and fleshes out well the idea of a society struggling to adapt to new ways of living and thinking several generations down the line.
It also does a great job of fleshing out characters and the plot only hinted at in card flavour text-if you enjoy the background and flavour of the game, then your enjoyment of the book will no doubt be increased (the explanation of how land powers spells is genius!)
That's not to say you should shy away if you have no idea what Magic:the Gathering is (though the chances that you're reading this, and you don't know of the game are miniscule...), for it is a good book in it's own right. And it convinced me to read more of the series-that's a reccommendation if ever I heard one!
