This third volume in Mike Ashley's four-volume study of the science-fictionmagazines focuses on the turbulent years of the 1970s, when the United States emerged from the Vietnam War into an economic crisis. It saw the end of the Apollo moon programme and the start of the ecology movement. This proved to be one of the most complicated periods for thescience-fiction magazines. Not only were they struggling to survive within the economic climate, they also had to cope with the death of the father of modern science fiction, John W. Campbell, Jr., while facing new and potentially threatening opposition. The market for science fiction diversified like never before, with the growth in new anthologies, the emergence of semi-professional magazines, the explosion of science fiction in college, the start of role-playing gaming magazines, underground and adult comics and, with the success of Star Wars, media magazines. This volume explores how the traditional science-fiction magazines coped with this, from the death of Campbell to the start of the major popular science magazine Omni and the first dreams of the Internet.

Fascinating history of SF magazines of the 70s. Great insights into the world of SF of the period, what went right and wrong with the SF magazines of the time, the stories, the authors etc. This is the third book in the series on the history of SF magazines. Also lists many obscure titles, etc - most probably very hard to find these days.

Mike Ashley's history of science fiction magazines continues its high standard with "Gateways to Forever." This is the first volume Ashley has devoted to a single decade, but the Seventies were complex enough that he needed to. Topics covered include the decline and fall of If, Galaxy and Fantastic and the emergence of Asimov's and Omni, as well as the challenge posed to the magazines by the original anthologies and the impact of "Star Wars."
Ashley keeps things clear and is remarkably even-handed in his treatment of controversial issues, such as the impact of editor Roger Elwood on the field. He makes the case that Seventies science fiction, often viewed as a dull time between the New Wave and Cyberpunk, was actually quite good and showed how the field was maturing. Strongly recommended to anyone with an interest in how science fiction developed.
