Product Description

Product Description

This book is a sequel to Wolfe Lowenthal’s first book: There Are No Secrets. Like the previous book, it is about his teacher, the great Cheng Man-ch’ing, the art of Tai Chi Chuan, and his experience as a student and teacher.

From the Publisher

An exploration of Cheng Man-ch'ing's Tao
"It is so inspiring to find someone who can put the subtle and powerful concepts of Tai Chi - so unlike our western thinking - into words. Wolfe Lowenthal make accessible the thoughts and wisdom of Professor Cheng, persuading very different interpretations of reality to perch in the palm of one's hand, unlocking new understanding. This is a remarkable thing for those who never had the opportunity to know Professor and his senior students. Even more remarkable is Lowenthal's ability to link the principles and inner teachings of Tai Chi with ordinary life and the development of ourselves as human beings." -Pat Gorman, Senior Teacher, The School of Tai Chi Ch'uan, New York City; Associate Editor, The Tai Chi Press

"During the time we studied together with Chen Man-ch'ing, I was always inspired by how Wolfe Lowenthal practiced the principles of Tai Chi and the Tao which Chen Man-ch'ing so generously imparted to us. Lowenthal continues to inspire me as he writes with depth of understanding and an open-hearted spirit of liveliness about the teachings of this great modern-day sage." -Jane Faigao, Director, Traditional Arts, Naropa Institute; Co-Director ROcky Mountain Tai Chi Ch'uan

Wolfe Lowenthal was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1939 and attended Carnegie Mellon University. He has worked as an anti-war activist, a typesetter, and a screen writer. In 1967 he began studying Tai Chi Ch'uan with Professor Cheng Man-ch'ing, Eventually becoming an assistant. After Professor Cheng's death in 1975, Lowenthal began teaching Tai Chi. He lives with his wife and young son in New York, where he studies and teaches at his school, The Long River Tai Chi Circle. He is the author of a previous book about Professor Ching, There are no Secrets, published in 1991.

Tai Chi hits the West 24 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This isn't a manual or hand book but is a very engaging story indeed of how one of the most influential and recognised tai chi practitioners brought the East and West together. Written by one of Chen Man Chings senior students it includes both the Professors teachings and philosophy, and the political/ social background that Tai Chi existed in. Well worth a look for anyone beginning Tai Chi.

Poor follow up 14 Mar 2007
By Madge
Format:Paperback
I guess I was expecting a better follow up to THERE ARE NO SECRETS but this is nowhere near as good. It felt like the leftovers never published in the first book.

Master Cheng is the man who brought Tai Chi to the US, prompting its rapid spread in the West. This book is continuing Wolfe Lowenthal's loving tribute to the man, continuing where his "There are No Secrets: Professor Cheng Man-ching and His T'ai Chi Ch'uan" leaves off.

Lowenthal shares more memories of Master Cheng, offering both amusing and inspiring anecdotes. He also offers his own insight in Tai Chi and its techniques. However, this not a book to teach the reader the Tai Chi form or "Push Hands"; it's a tribute to a man that lived Tai Chi every moment of his life.

If you are looking for a book that will help you better understand both the man who brought Tai Chi to the West and Tai Chi's theoretical background, this is a good book for you. If, however, you wish to study the form, you may prefer Master Cheng's pther books, "Cheng Tzu's Thirteen Treatises on T'ai Chi Ch'uan" and "Master Cheng's New Method of Tai Chi Self-cultivation".
