Too many people are complaining about the superclubs going commercial. What with the declining quality Ministry of Sound's Annual CDs and Creams mainstream offering, it's difficult to actually find a track that you'd actually hear if you stepped inside the actual club!
So it's a good job Gatecrasher still know what their public want. I'll write this review in 3 parts.
CD1 - The Science
Fantastic tracklist and a great way to start off the Triple-CD set. The pace is set with the opening track, State of Mind - All Because of You (Sunday Club Remix) and never slows down. By the time Yahel - Massive Control came in I was already grinning like an idiot, then along comes Arakis - Aira Force and blows me away. The Push remix of Sinead O'Conner - Troy leads the way into the second half of the CD and from that point on I was dancing in my seat all the way through Petwert - Symphonic, Rank1 - Awakening until Marco V - Godd exploded out of the speakers and marked the end.
CD2 - The Power
The second CD is a bit disappointing. I was expecting something a lot harder with tracks like Mauro Picotto - Bangkok and the DJ Scott Project Rmx of Brooklyn Bounce - Club Bizarre on the tracklist. The CD starts off wonderfully with Hemstock & Jennings - The Nazaren but doesn't really begin to pick up the pace until Kai Tracid - Life Is Too Short, which leaves the impression that half a CD's been wasted. I get the feeling the first half of this CD are tracks they wanted to have on CD1 but couldn't fit. Nonetheless it's still a fantastic CD, just that after the Meltdown CD from Digital I was hoping for more of the same.
CD3 - The Karma
Chillout CD's are ten a penny these days and I'm still not convinced that Gatecrashers decision to include one in their last two compilations isn't just an attempt to cash in on the current craze. As ambient CD's go it's not bad at all, and it's a great improvment on Digital's Chillout disc. But it's nothing that wasn't done better with Chilled Euphoria (mixed by Solar Stone).
All in all it looks like I'm being a bit negative but that's not the case at all. The first CD is amazing and although CD2 wasn't what I was expecting it's a great listen. It's brilliently compiled and mixed by Gatecrasher resident Scott Bond and does a great job of showcasing the sound of the club. Definetly a glimpse towards the future of Trance.
