There is nothing to match this book. It is both comprehensive guide and indispensable companion - as pleasurable to read as it is to cook from. --Nigella Lawson

A reference book that any serious chef can t leave on the kitchen bookshelf. --The Bookseller, 21st June issue

A reference book that any serious chef can t leave on the kitchen bookshelf. --The Bookseller, 21st June issue

this revised, new work is the classic, must-buy gift for all lovers of Italian food and cookery… You will be dipping in and out continuously, because the compendium is so much more than just a cookbook. --The Foodie Bugle

An addictively readable encyclopaedia/cookbook running to 500 pages...Anna Del Conte's knowledge and assurance are reminiscent of Elizabeth David, while her scope and flashes of humour bring to mind Alan Davidson's Oxford Companion to Food. The Gastronomy of Italy certainly deserves a place alongside their magisterial works. --The Independent Magazine, November 2013

Anne Del Conte is the grandmother of Italian cookery, and her comprehensively updated and handsomely illustrated dictionary of Italian gastronomy is reassuringly authoritative...if Anna says ragu alla Bolognese has to be cooked for two hours, and should be served with tagliatelle, but never with spaghetti...you wouldn t dare to argue --Daily Mail

this revised, new work is the classic, must-buy gift for all lovers of Italian food and cookery… You will be dipping in and out continuously, because the compendium is so much more than just a cookbook. A truly exhaustive reference manual, it can also be consulted for its minuteness of detail on unusual and even unknown products, Chefs, food writers and folklore. If you enjoy travelling to Italy and want to learn the Italian food terms, they are all laid out for you from A-Z with English subtitles too. There is no excuse for gesticulating to bewildered Italian waiters any more: from now on fluency and confidence will be the goals. --The Foodie Bugle

Anna Del Conte is a giant of Italian cookery and it shows in this latest edition of her classic guide to Italian food. This is part cookery book, part encyclopedia and is crammed with information. If you have every wanted to know more about the history, meaning and regionality of the Italian food you cook and eat, then this is the book to do it. I dip into my copy all the time. There is a mass of recipes in here too, all in Anna's classic, simple style.

Any book by the queen of Italian cuisine is a winner with me. This is fantastic. And she deserves our thanks for inspiring Nigella to cook.

This is a wonderful book about Italian cooking, not only offering a huge selection of delicious recipes but also an alphabetical history of Italian food and the people and ingredients behind it.

The book makes for a very interesting read, the colour photos are beautiful and make the food look very appealing, and it is a whopping chunk of book for the price it is sold for.

I am looking forward to trying some of these recipes out in future.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is an impressive reference book on Italian food and cooking - and as such, does not really lend itself to the Kindle or iPad. You need to know what you are looking for in order to dip into it and if you do, it will have the answer. However, if you are looking for inspiration or a recipe, buy another book.

This was bought as a present for my wife, and she is SO pleased with it. It is the bees knees - recipes, history, comment, advice and very, very Italian.
I would almost go as far as to say that this is a masterpiece, and thoroughly deserves to be in the library of anyone who takes their Italian food seriously
