Book Description

19 May 2012
Follow the adventures of Gaspar, a freelance thief who stubbornly refuses to swear fealty to the Thieves' Guild. Cursed with a special affinity for calamity and mishap, and a talent for snatching defeat from the brink of victory, our hero blunders from one misfortune to the next, yet somehow always manages to survive to tell the tale. Accompanied by his long-suffering companions - Hubris, a spellbroker who refuses to pay his dues to Wizards' Hall, and Marna, a feisty thiefess with a quick tongue and a quicker temper - our unlikely hero encounters looming retribution and imminent catastrophe at every step. From a sinister funeral ship to a scheming seductress; from a puzzling murder to a gang of merciless ship-wreckers; and from a goblin army laying siege to an ancient border fortress to a mischievous wood-wight with a penchant for table legs and floorboards, there's no end to the troubles he can find! Told with an appealing mixture of seriousness and humour, this is an exciting romp based in a fantasy world where anything can, and usually does, happen! This paperback edition now includes the prequel novella, Gaspar And The Fantastical Hats, available separately as a Kindle e-book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terry Pratchett fans, read on 23 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This fantasy reminded me very much (in style, not plot) of Terry Pratchett's earliest discworld novels, The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic, and if you enjoyed these then you should definitely try Gaspar the Thief. At first I was unsure about the episodic nature of the book's structure, but although each chapter is a self-contained adventure, the relationships between the characters build throughout the book and by the end of chapter 3 I was completely engaged. The writing style helps create the atmosphere of a mediaeval or 'Middle-Earth' environment and if Orcs don't appear - well you feel they could at any moment. The adventures of Gaspar and his travelling companions become more complex as the book unfolds and there are plenty of battles along the way.
I recommend this book to fantasy-lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars No honour amongst thieves 17 Jan 2013

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this book as I don't usually read fantasy novels however needn't have worried. The book is a series of short stories and novellas that merge from one story to the next so can be read as a novel. The tales of Gaspar a professional thief, his sidekick wizard Hubris and love/hate interest Marna are many and varied.Stories about his on going disputes with the Thieves Guild, plundering funeral ships and solving mysterious murders are all there. I particularly enjoyed "The Spires of Chai'Kanduma ", the battle between goblin hoards and an undermanned garrison defending Lich Gap had me on the edge of my seat, the tale interspersed with Gaspars dealing with Drune a wood-wight until the two plot lines merge at the end of the story.
An excellent read even if you aren't a fan of fantasy and I look forward to David's next book.
