From the Author

The idea for the book came from Phil, who found it frustrating that existing textbooks gave very little coverage relevant beyond university level. Though both of us are employed by Rolls-Royce it was written in our own time, over 3 years. We worked really hard to make the text and figures readable, and to provide practical guidelines.

It covers all main aspects of engine performance, including many hardly addressed at all elsewhere, such as transient performance, windmilling, starting and test data analysis. It includes all types of gas turbine: turbojets, turbofans, turboprops, turboshafts, APUs and ramjets.

Comments about the book have been favorable, it is appreciated both as an introduction and as more advanced reference. We were also awarded the UK Royal Aeronautical Society's Sir Roy Fedden Award for the book.

Whilst the same excellent technical content is present as in the first edition, unfortunately there appears to have been a "proof reader's" strike whilst preparing this edition - I have found a number of errors / typos in the example formulae ( by comparing the text with a colleague's copy of the first edition), and it is really irritating to find the number 8 everywhere there should be a degree () symbol. A good book let down by some quality control issues in this edition

It is the most comprehensive and detailed book on gas turbine performance one could find in public domain. One debatable feature of the book is to have all equations in FORTRAN/BASIC format together in the end of each chapter. This makes the equation lengthy and sometimes difficult to follow its physical meaning. Nevertheless, it is a very excellent reference book.

I wish I had this book when I was writing my thesis. I had to learn this stuff the hard way. All you need to know for simulating gas turbine engines is in there. My only complaints are that the book smells funny, and there should be 'actual' compressor maps in there (although these are hard to get).

This book is definitively the most comprehensive one on the topic of gas turbine performance. From the basics of thermodynamics to the issues of control systems, it covers all the useful topics a performance engineer should be aware of. Detailed explanations of physical issues like transient behavior, surge ... are given in a clear and simple way. Always a handy source of information on a desk.
