Takes the harsh edge off flash pictures 27 Oct 2011

This device is effective in taming the harsh popup flash effect and is clever in its design so it can be stuffed into a pocket or camera case without worrying much about it being damaged. The two piece design takes a moment to assemble and clip on the camera, but then too would putting a separate flash unit on that might have better light dispersion.

It is comparatively cheap, light weight and compact compared to using an accessory flash unit so for taking informal snapshots, this is a great tool when I don't need lots of light for dark rooms and distant subjects. It also wont' replace times when a bounce flash is best.

Good diffuser for on the go 18 Oct 2011

While I prefer to use off camara flash this is a handy little gadget to soften the pop up flash for my Sony alpha 700 when I have to use that in a pinch. There isn't really that much too it. A holder that slides into the hot shoe and the translucent fixture that attaches to the holder. There are multiple attachment points built into the diffuser so you can adjust the hight. It does what it does as advertized. The only beef I have is that I think it's over priced. But most of Gary Fong products are not inexpensive. It's well made and comes apart to fit nicely in the top pouch of my camara bag.

Sony Puffer 18 Feb 2011
By Adam Caron - Published on Amazon.com

Haven't had a chance to try it much yet, but seems to do exactly what it claims. I am using it on an A330 and the flash on it is so harsh that it is borderline unusable. The Puffer fits nicely into the hotshoe and does a good job of diffusing the light, though it does cut down on the overall light output a noticeable amount. It's a small trade-off though to be able to actually use the flash. The item, as mentioned by other reviewers of the non-Sony model, does have a cheap, plasticy, flimsy feel for $20, but I can't say I've had any problems with it thus far.

Update:

Having used it more, I have noticed that it tends to reflect an annoying amount of light back towards me as I'm photographing, though I still wouldn't change my rating. The light has to go somewhere, and as mentioned if some of it has to come back towards me to make the flash usable, so be it.
