Anyone who has read this wonderful re-imagining of Dare will know it not only a great space action romp, but also contains both a witty swipe or two at UK politics and an examination of the qualities of the officer and men of Britain who fought in simpler times. Putting it simply, it is a little stab of joy. However this version is printed so badly - the first few pages look as if they have water damage - that no-one should ever recommend buying this edition of the material.

I reviewed the previous part release of Dan Dare and was waiting eagerly for the release of the finished product ( Did they do a part release just to separate the impatient from their hard earned? ).
I enjoyed it immensely on a couple of levels, firstly the writing/art are first rate worth the wait and the gelt.
But on second and third reading I enjoyed spotting the "little bits", the homages to past People and Ships that had been slipped in like San Demetrio London (a heroic tale of the merchant service, also recounted in a classic war film), Captain Walker RN (a noted Sub-Hunter on the western approaches) both being resurrected as Space Ships and movingly mirrored the HMS Jervis Bay's epic fight to save her convoy from the German Pocket Battleship Admiral Scheer.
The conduct of the fictional British Prime Minister seems far fetched, but just having watched the British Home Secretary defend and excuse her husband buying and watching "films with adult themes" ( why not just say porn?) on a Television bought by the taxpayer, in her "Second Home" which garners huge allowences paid for by the taxpayer, one thinks way not? When you sell your integrity, pride and self respect why not to a "Squalid Little Man" on a floating chamber pot (The Mekon).

Came upon this late... & found it's not Hampson's Dare. I read this as an updating with a good deal of respect for the original, Ennis takes him in a different direction, the political intrigue makes an interesting contemporary comment & Ennis shows some real knowledge of British military history, the tactics Dare uses mirroring Nelson. If you can interpret Dare as a British WWII airman transplanted into a 1950s vision of space exploration, then it genuinely seemed to me that Ennis shows more "real" respect for the people who fought during that war than Hampson's rather boy's own adventures do (I mean Ennis' version lacks the pantomime "gosh! war can be jolly good fun can't it?" stance). It'll never get near the following of Hampson, I guess it might be too much of a departure from what Dare fans are fans of, but it's really worth a look & for it to be considered for its own merits rather than just compared to Hampson.

British hero still the best!
I have been an avid Dan Dare fan for 30 years. I was overjoyed when this new mini-series was released. Bought the omnibus to preserve the original comic issues. Read more

Sorry, but whilst this is an interesting story, it has very little to do with the real Dan Dare. The character names are the same but otherwise it is not Dan Dare. Read more
