Format: Paperback
The story running through issues #4-6 of volume 2 of Dynamite Comics' Battlefields is collected as Battlefields - Anna Kharkova. This is an interesting return to the story of the `Night Witches' from Battlefields: Night Witches: 1 (Battlefields (Dynamite)). This time we follow Anna Kharkova from her capture by the Germans towards the end of the Second World War, through the Stalinist trials for `traitors' who allowed themselves to be captured, her rescue from them by (the now promoted) Major `Mouse'; their adventures in the Koran war, when Anna's insubordination gets them sent to Siberia, and finally her last flight in a stolen super-MIG 21 in the 1960s. It is an interesting look at the fate of Soviet war-heroes who cross the political officers (NKVD/KGP etc.) who appear to have unlimited power, but only to influence the fate of individuals for the worse. For all the Western liberal posturing about the freedom of the individual, the vast majority of the world's population have never experienced it, and never will. The ending is another bit of `romantic' posturing, as the only real option in these circumstances is suicide or treason, and this is likely to be, despite the avoidance of the question, is likely to be the former.. I have still given it 4-stars, because Mr Ennis is such a good writer, and, despite the ending, it is still a very interesting story.

Although not as tightly plotted as its predecessor - the excellent Motherland - this not only rounds off the story of Anna Kharkova very satisfactorily, but is a most engaging read all by itself and one that tugs most successfully at the heartstrings. As a fan of 2000AD from ages past (as is Garth Ennis), I could not help seeing a growing resemblance between Anna and our beloved Halo Jones from long ago. Read the last pages in particular and tell me I'm wrong.
One word of warning though: for heaven's sake don't read the blurb, or even look at the back cover until you've read the story, as it gives away far too much.
