Product Description

The history of sport has seen many great gladiatorial clashes: Ali v Frazier in boxing, McEnroe v Borg in tennis, Prost v Senna in motor racing. None however can quite compare to the intensity of the rivalry between those two great world chess champions: Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov. Between 1984 and 1990 they contested an astonishing five World Championship matches consisting of 144 individual encounters. This volume concentrates on the first two of those matches.

The epic 1984/85 contest which was lasted six months before being controversially halted "without result" by the then President of FIDE Florencio Campomanes.

The 1985 match when Kasparov brilliantly won the final game to take the title and become - at the age of 22 - the youngest ever world champion.

Great chess contests have often had resonances extending beyond the 64 squares. The Fischer v Spassky match was played during the Cold War with both champions being perceived as the finest products of their respective ideologies. The Karpov v Korchnoi battles (three matches between 1974 and 1981) were lent an edge with Karpov being a Russian hero of the pre-Glasnost era whilst Korchnoi was the disaffected dissident. The Kasparov v Karpov encounters mirrored a battle between the new Russia and old Russia with Kasparov seen as a symbol of the new ideology emerging under Gorbachev whereas Karpov was seen to represent the old regime of die-hard Communists such as Brezhnev.

In this volume Garry Kasparov (world champion between 1985 and 2000 and generally regarded as the greatest player ever) analyses in depth the clashes from 1984 and 1985, giving his opinions both on the political machinations surrounding the matches as well as the games themselves.

Battle commences 11 Feb 2011
By Derek Jones TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
The matches between Kasparov and Karpov were legendary. Karpov had been world chapion for ten years and Kasparov was to follow him as champion for 15 years, during which time he had to defend his ttitle several times.

The first Kasparov-Karpov match started in September 1984. This book starts from 1975 when Kasparov was still a child, the first game in the book being a game in which the young Kasparov played Karpov during a simultaneous display. After a handful of games the rest of the book is devoted to the first two K-K matches - in 1984/5 and in 1985. The first match was memorable because Karpov quickly built a 4-0 lead (needing 6) but was unable to finish off his opponent. The match was called off after a record 48 games with Karpov leading 5-3 but clearly on the point of collapse. The second match was limited to 24 games and Kasparov won to become the youngest ever world champion.

There is much detail about the dubious dealings that led to the cancellation of the first match against Kasparov's wishes but there is much more on the chess itself. Kasparov had established himeslf as world number one for an unparalled 20 years and after retirement sought a different form of glory via a series of monumental books, of which this is the seventh. It is not a book for those seeking a series of anecdotes or short brilliancies. With the assistance of computer analysis and his own insights Kasparov provides a remarkably detailed analysis of each game. Definitely a book for the connoisseur.

Excellent chess book. 21 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
62 games between Kasparov and Karpov - deeply annotated by the former.

Also included is a lot of the background to these 2 matches and that alone is almost worth the cost of the book.

Highly recommended.

Not only does this book provide incredible analysis of the on board battles between messrs k and k to a level probably over the head of most average players, but nonetheless fascinating to all those interested in this most beautiful of games,it also gives a detailed account of the political machinations facing kasparov's inevitable rise through the ranks to claim the world title.
