For hands-free calling, nüLink! 1695 integrates Bluetooth® wireless technology with a built-in microphone and speaker. Pair it with your compatible Bluetooth phone and talk hands-free through 1695 while staying focused on the road. Simply dial numbers with nüvi's touchscreen keypad to make a call and to answer, just tap the screen and speak. Enjoy convenient one-touch dialling for all your contacts and POIs.

Sat Nav,
By Sonny "SH" (Wiltshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Garmin nüLink! 1695 5-inch Sat Nav with Live Services, Live Traffic, Full European Mapping and Bluetooth (Electronics)
I had expected this satnav to deliver all I had expected and it did.
It was very accurate when I used it to navigate from my home in Wiltshire, through France and Belgium to a destination in Germany. The traffic reports were very accurate and it truly saved the day when we entered a massive traffic jam on the Ring Road just north of Brussels. Immediately, the traffic indicator turned to red and the display provided me with alternative routes to avoid the jam caused by an overturned butcher's lorry! Well done! The screen refreshes very rapidly thus avoiding any delays in latest display and the navigation through the menu is relatively simple. However, there are some things that I must mention and which really do require attention: 1. Indicating where you have been and travelling to is fine but details of the route name/number one is on is not indicated unless the screen display is changed in which case the movement indicator stops at the point where the car moves out of the screen. Similarly, it would be nice to have essential services, e.g., petrol stations, car main dealers offering repairs, A&E, etc indicated on the map simultaneously as one drives along. 2. The pronunciation of many place and street names can be very bad and in Germany I actually found it misleading. Typically, "Ruislip" in west London is pronounced as "Rooosleep" while the German "Hauptstrasse" is pronounced as "Hepstress". In the case of the foreign names, it is probably better to ignore the voice and look at the screen where the name is actually spelt out or else you wil be left pondering while the car moves along! Dangerous! 3. I would like to hear a louder gong signal when approcahing a speed camera: it is very feint. Overll though, I am well pleased with my purchase and would buy it again if I had need to replace it for any reason.

Good Device but spoilt by peripherals,

This review is from: Garmin nüLink! 1695 5-inch Sat Nav with Live Services, Live Traffic, Full European Mapping and Bluetooth (Electronics)
At the outset, if you're looking for a nuLink device, Garmin's site shows a couple of newer devices which were not yet available at the time I bought the device. So if its the latest technology you want, it may be worth either checking or waiting.
The satnav is generally one that befits a top-of-the-range device. The nuLink services appear really good, the most useful I've found is the ability to search for points of interest - the device obviously hits google via the web, meaning that you essentially have a free-form search rather than having to choose from a list. Very functional. Another plus is that the device will do a petrol check, based on your current location. Not only do you get to know where all the local stations are, but the device also tells you the price of petrol at each. From experience this isn't realtime, gets updated a couple of times a week, but quite useful nevertheless. More ambiguous is exactly what you get with "one year of free Garmin nuLink services". These services include, for example, a safety camera subscription. When I log in to the Garmin site, I see that I have the subscription, with the correct expiry date, and indeed I can access the data files and upload them to the device. However the device itself says I am not subscribed to this service. So I don't know whether there are two services here, or what. (I have contacted Garmin Support to clarify this but four weeks later am still awaiting a response - another minus.) In addition there are pay services such as the weather - you get local weather for free (i.e. included in the basic service) - great, certainly beats looking out of the window! - but if you want the ability to check the weather anywhere, you need to pay a monthly subscription. I think its quite a small amount but these things add up. Not entirely satisfied with the quality of the maps, either. Last weekend it sent us onto a motorway when it was supposed to be directing us to a hotel - it thought that the hotel was accessed from the slip road when in fact no access road existed. Also when driving locally, the maps do not reflect changes that were made to the road layout over a year ago (despite us having downloaded the latest available maps onto the device). One other thing which might interest people moving over from TomTom. With TomTom I was used to paying an annual subscription to keep my maps updated, however with the Garmin device you buy a one-off map update which is good for the lifetime of the device, so this should be cheaper in the long run. Worth shopping around for this by the way - at the time of writing the lifetime update costs £75 on Garmin's site but only £55 on Amazon.

1695 not working out of the box.,

This review is from: Garmin nüLink! 1695 5-inch Sat Nav with Live Services, Live Traffic, Full European Mapping and Bluetooth (Electronics)
Updated as of 28th March 2011
3 stars, (originally 1), and that's because of faulty software in the 1695 that didn't allow me to link up with the Garmin web site for updates and downloads etc. Oh and a very slow technical support response from Garmin. Summary of review so far. I chose the Garmin 1695 over the Tom Tom 1000 due to poor user reports on the 1000 software and customer support although 99% of professional reviews give both units at least 4 our of 5 stars. Mine had faulty software out of the box and wouldn't hook up correctly with the Garmin web updater software so it was sent back the same day. It took a week for the unit to be returned, at least it seems to be working. Garmin have given me an extra years subscription to NuLink for the hassle, (yet to show up on my on line account). The 'nuLink' subscription starts running when you switch on, (a live link that gives traffic reports, Google search, etc). As the unit was faulty I'd asked for the 'nuLink' activation date to be changed to the receipt of the repaired unit. Finally one week on & several emails this has been done. The Garmin web site with 'myDashboard' (for updates), seems to be a work in progress as I've encountered various problems, nothing major just a hassle. Still I gather Tom Tom's site has similar issues. Amazon advertised the unit as having White Pages, Weather radar, and Over the air speed cameras included in the subscripion, they were not. Several weeks battling between Amazon and Garmin and threatening legal action I finally received a settlement from Amazon so eventually all good there. OK one week on since repair, still problems with customer service but isn't this the case with almost all big corporations. Now it's working I'm impressed so far. (Compared to my 5yr old Road Angel). Clear display with 'lane assist' very handy indeed on motorways and flyovers. Voice instructions clear and easy to understand, (although female voice sounds quite 80's robotic, male is less annoying). You can download, (from Garmin Garage), other voices. Tom Tom gets Roger Moore, Yoda, Snoop Dog and Brian Blessed amongst others, Garmin ~ Sponge Bob and Dora the Explorer! Google works really well and very quick, (Garmin search option does not), type in Thai for instance and in a few seconds all Thai restaurants near your location displayed, just click on one and press GO for navigation. The manual included with the unit is very basic you need to download the full instruction one for all functions and then some appear to be missing. I wanted more info displayed on screen, eventually found how to turn this on by: Tools/Settings/Navigation/Car/Map data layout. Now I can have the map with on the right, ETA, Distance to travel, Temperature, Current time etc, (you can vary these options). Current speed and road speed always displayed bottom right, (not 100% accurate, found the unit saying 60 when in a 50mph limit). Conclusion: Faulty from day one, repaired but still software issues. Misleading advertising on nuLink services,(now corrected) and a woefully bad customer support. However the unit works quickly with a host of useful functions and is way better than others I've used to date............Watch this space........
