As almost everyone else I took my time deciding which Sat Nav to go for and eventually chose this model as it offered me all the options that I was looking for. It seems to me that in the Sat Nav world your either a Tom Tom person or a Garmin person. I have had a Toyota sat nav that came with the last two cars and also have used the company Tom Tom GO 910 abroad.
I contacted Garmin by email to ask a couple of questions and was pleased that the replies were quick and courteous enough to give me confidence in their customer service; this has been tested since I got the unit by a 'phone call and again very helpful. I bought the City Xplorer map for London and couldn't work out how to use it. Apparently they only work once your in the city itself or if you need to plan a route. I'm sure that it will work fine.
What about the unit itself? Great map, very clear screen. I deliberatley went the "wrong way" a couple of times to test the re-routing ability, it re-routed very quickly indeed. It regconised the "New" innner ring road in Sheffield as well. Lane assist and the motorway junction photo very good. The motorway junction photo, showing you where to turn off, only works if you've programmed in a destination. When you've reached your desination the road ahead on the map goes white so, apart from telling you that you've arrived, you know not to go any further.
I found adding destinations to "Favorites" very easy to do and the whole thing quite easy to work and I'm not "techie" by any stretch of the imagination.
I have been so impressed by the Safety camera info that I've stopped the subscribtions to Road Angel straight away and bought a years subscription to the garmin cyclops one which will save me about £24 per year!
All good so far, but any niggles? The only one that I have is that voice struggles to pronounce some of the road names. For example Sandygate road come out as Sandagate road and I couldn't even start to explain how "she" pronounced Hillsborough.
For me it works great and I would definately rate it five stars even with the street name issue.
Ok a few weeks on and I'm still happy with it. The latest map update happened but took quite a time to download, I would say a couple of hours. The niggle that I had with voice is still there, what I originally thoufght was "At the roundabout" turned out to be "Enter roundabout"I've found that you can download a Garmin "Web update" programme that should sort it out. I have downloaded the programme and it had all sorts of other things that you can download as well. Will be trying it out again at the weekend.
The city Xplorer maps only work once your in the City concerened but I couldn't get it to function when I was in Wembley stadium, not sure why, but will try again next time in London.
Took it out on a trip to Cardiff thought it would give it good run. Entered the post code of where we were staying oops not regcognised. Entered Cardiff - oops not regcognised, scratched head, the wife says perhaps you need to change the country to Wales, did that, worked a treat. Have now set the the country as United Kingdom should resolve any further problems.
