Sat Nav review 26 April 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
As almost everyone else I took my time deciding which Sat Nav to go for and eventually chose this model as it offered me all the options that I was looking for. It seems to me that in the Sat Nav world your either a Tom Tom person or a Garmin person. I have had a Toyota sat nav that came with the last two cars and also have used the company Tom Tom GO 910 abroad.

I contacted Garmin by email to ask a couple of questions and was pleased that the replies were quick and courteous enough to give me confidence in their customer service; this has been tested since I got the unit by a 'phone call and again very helpful. I bought the City Xplorer map for London and couldn't work out how to use it. Apparently they only work once your in the city itself or if you need to plan a route. I'm sure that it will work fine.

What about the unit itself? Great map, very clear screen. I deliberatley went the "wrong way" a couple of times to test the re-routing ability, it re-routed very quickly indeed. It regconised the "New" innner ring road in Sheffield as well. Lane assist and the motorway junction photo very good. The motorway junction photo, showing you where to turn off, only works if you've programmed in a destination. When you've reached your desination the road ahead on the map goes white so, apart from telling you that you've arrived, you know not to go any further.

I found adding destinations to "Favorites" very easy to do and the whole thing quite easy to work and I'm not "techie" by any stretch of the imagination.

I have been so impressed by the Safety camera info that I've stopped the subscribtions to Road Angel straight away and bought a years subscription to the garmin cyclops one which will save me about £24 per year!

All good so far, but any niggles? The only one that I have is that voice struggles to pronounce some of the road names. For example Sandygate road come out as Sandagate road and I couldn't even start to explain how "she" pronounced Hillsborough.

For me it works great and I would definately rate it five stars even with the street name issue.

Ok a few weeks on and I'm still happy with it. The latest map update happened but took quite a time to download, I would say a couple of hours. The niggle that I had with voice is still there, what I originally thoufght was "At the roundabout" turned out to be "Enter roundabout"I've found that you can download a Garmin "Web update" programme that should sort it out. I have downloaded the programme and it had all sorts of other things that you can download as well. Will be trying it out again at the weekend.

The city Xplorer maps only work once your in the City concerened but I couldn't get it to function when I was in Wembley stadium, not sure why, but will try again next time in London.

Took it out on a trip to Cardiff thought it would give it good run. Entered the post code of where we were staying oops not regcognised. Entered Cardiff - oops not regcognised, scratched head, the wife says perhaps you need to change the country to Wales, did that, worked a treat. Have now set the the country as United Kingdom should resolve any further problems.

This is my third sat nav in the last 7 years, my first was one of the orginial Garmin Street Pilots which while basic was a good little unit, and my second was a top of the range Tom Tom which was the 940 live. I want to say how happy I am to come back to Garmin and although I have only owned the 2460LT for a few weeks I much prefer it over the Tom Tom which took an age to get a fix on the satellites and had a habit of switching itself off and on again. The Garmin however is very quick to find satellites, So far the voice regonizition has worked perfectly everytime I have used it, The mapping is clear and I am impressed with the 'photo real' junctions, the unit has also been very quick in re-routing when I have intentionally strayed off route. The unit, on the whole has been quick to alert me to speed cameras although it did fail to regonise a set of average speed cameras at a set of roadworks on the M1 which surprised me. As I say I have only had the 2460LT for about two weeks but I have already used it several times and apart from missing the roadwork speed cameras on one occasion it has behaved perfectly. The traffic service may not be quite as 'modern' as Tom Tom's live service and you have to stick the FM ariel to your windscreen but I have found it to be less temprimental to the Tom Tom system so far and of course there are no nasty subscriptions for the traffic service. Finally I have read a few reviews on the net where people are saying it took them a few hours on doing the first software update, I did my first update and it only took a couple of minutes so maybe I was lucky in recieving a unit that was pretty much up to date out of the box. Anyway,to summerize I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Garmin 2460LT to anyone looking for an easy to use feature packed Sat Nav whether its your first sat nav or you've owned many before.

Good performer 25 May 2011
By NT
I previously had a TomTom which had a good interface and mapping, but had a terminal failure when downloading the first map of a year's subscription.

The Garmin 2460LT has a better and clearer interface, and I've downloaded two map updates with no problems.

Mapping isn't quite so good as the TomTom, but it is certainly fine for navigation in the UK, and the traffic notifications are excellent. I drive a round trip of 95 miles daily to work, and it has alerted me several times to hotspots and provided sensible re-routings.

There are one or two funnies with navigation at particular times of day, so you do sometimes have to take the route with a pinch of salt. It tried to divert me off the A45 to an overhead roundabout, then take the second exit on the roundabout back down to the A45, and on another occasion, took me off the M1 at Harrow and into 8 miles of slow traffic when the M1 was clear. C'est la vie!

Having said that, the interface is dead easy to use (I haven't read the manual yet) and it locks on to satellites very quickly, even in the house with the curtains drawn.

The web interface "My Dashboard" works well and is adequate to the task of keeping it up to date and, importantly, works well on a Mac. I haven't tried the Mac version of the RoadTrip software yet, but will update this if it turns out to be useful.

Definitely better than TomTom overall.
