Hi All

I am completely absolutely newbie and I need some serious help. I have just bought an e-trex H mainly to find my way back to the car when my wife and I go for walks in country parks we do not know. Believe me, we have been lost a few times and a 2 hour walk ended up being a 4 hour one !!

The reason I bought the e-trex H is I do not need anything fancy at all. Now that I have bought it, I do not have a clue how to use it. All I want to do is when I park my car, mark that spot and then return to it when we have finished our walking.

I would be very grateful if someone gives me an "Idiot's Guide", step by step, as how to do it. I understand I have to mark the car park as a waypoint but then what? What is a trail and do I need to activate it? How do I tell e-Trex to take me back to my car?

I know all you expert hikers and geocachers would be laughing at me, but please help at the same time.

I dont think anyone will be laughing at you. Try a Pathfinder Guide book titled GPS for Walkers by Clive Thomas (you can find it on Amazon) has a section for the H, also some good free software for waypoints etc would be easyGPS if you have the pc sync lead (also available from Amazon). There is also a small book called, GPS made easy, get a new/used copy from Amazon extremely cheaply. Try a local outdoor sports centre or pop into a local Millets, you'll be surprised that they will often help with queries. Hope this helps.

Can someone please let me know if the ETrex H will give positions in OS Grid Ref. or in Degrees, NMinutes and Seconds or both. I would prefer to purchase a GPS that has Grid Ref capability. Thanks in advance

Map datum default set as WGS 84. Units = Statute as default. North Ref choice of True Magnetic Grid or User. Angle as degrees or miles... hope this helps, Z

Hello Phoenix, Like you i am having trouble understanding the etrex h. Am now retired so want to keep fit by walking, cycling etc, not getting lost so bought one in auction on ebay. When arrived, no cable to device/computer(mac) lead!! Looking for a lead but so many options cant make right decision. Is there a club/meeting site for complete novices like us. I sure would love some help!! Thanks.
