Garmin has raised the bar for portable automotive navigation with the StreetPilot 2610. This capable navigator offers everything you want in an automotive navigation system automatic route capability, voice prompts and a large color display for much less than built-in systems.
![]() All the travel information you need, right on your dash. |
With the StreetPilot 2610's touch screen and remote control, entering and retrieving information has never been easier. Perfect for both business and vacation, it's turn-by-turn routing and voice prompts get you where you're going accurately and safely. It's fast processor means quick route calculations and map redraws. The 2610 also features a large, easy-to-read screen, built-in maps, and everything needed to download additional map detail and look up points of interest and addresses in seconds. Select maps and transfer data directly to the unit through a USB connection and onto a standard CompactFlash® memory card.
With its built-in photo sensor, the StreetPilot 2610's bright display automatically adjusts to outside light conditions. The unit is powered through either its external speaker (which comes with a handy 12/24-volt adapter cable) or its dedicated AC power adapter; both are supplied.
The 2610 accepts downloadable map detail from Garmin's PC-based MapSource City Navigator DVD-ROM (included), which provides street-level detail, addresses, and listings of nearby restaurants, hotels, ATMs, and other attractions. (This feature requires a CompactFlash card, and a 128 MB CF card is included; you must first downloaded MapSource data in order to find points of interest and addresses.)
The StreetPilot's integrated dash-mounting system fosters easy adjustment and quick release. The unit comes with a built-in patch antenna and an MCX-type connector for attachment to an optional external GPS antenna.
Garmin makes accessories to help you integrate your GPS unit with your life and your priorities. Keep it at the ready while protecting it from knocks and bumps with a carrying case that has space for your hookup cable and remote control. In the car, you'll appreciate the mounting options and clear reception afforded by the magnetic/suction-mount antenna that'll give you a better signal than if you just place your unit on the dash. Using your system in more than one vehicle? Garmin's dashmount is just the ticket, providing one temporary and one permanent adhesive mounting disc so you can move the unit between your cars.

Street Pilot 2610,

I received my Street Pilot just over a week ago and am very pleased with the package. I have had good satellite signal when in the car and the unit has guided me faultlessly to numerous destinations including an address in Manchester City Centre. When deciding on my purchase I was in two minds as to whether or not to purchase Tom Tom Go or the Garmin. On reading various reviews one of the factors that influenced me most was the fact that you could specify which type of roads that you favoured when the unit calculated the route. This was important to me as I regularly tow a caravan and when doing so would wish to avoid minor roads. The Garmin allows you to not only specify the type of road but also the type of vehicle such as car, bus, truck etc. This gives you a far greater level of flexibility when compared to Tom Tom. Whilst the unit is good at finding adresses in towns etc it does have difficulties in finding addresses in the country such as isolated buildings and caravan sites! This is a common problem as detailed mapping is only available for centres of population. However the software provided means that following a search of Multimap the grid reference can be inputed into the computer and a waypoint created. This waypoint can then be tranferred to the Garmin. On the subject of directions these can't be faulted. Directions are given far enough in advance for the correct lane to be chosen. I was caught out once due to the failure of the road signs to notify me of a minor road on a roundabout and as a result I went off route (whilst towing). The Garmin notified me and re-calulated the route within seconds although you should be aware that in such circumstances I think that your preference for types of road no longer applies until you're back on route. All in all a very very handy gadget that makes life a lot easier and avoids arguments!

One important thing when buying a GPS is that you should be able to play with it and set it up etc on a PC, much more comfortable and familiar than trying to do it on a hand held device. This means the C310 C320 and C330 were out. This is a great unit that works straight out of the box. Accuracy is about as good as it gets. Garmin are simply the best there is for products, and probably more important, customer service. Go on give them a ring and see. Only downside is its not a full postcode search. The compact flash card is too small, get a 2gb one and all the maps will fit. The power lead is combined with the speaker/cigarette adaptor and is woefully short, as is the USB cable. Not sure I'd fancy using it outside on a bike etc, I doubt the waterproofing is up to Garmins usual standards. Wish I'd bought it years ago.

Garmin 2610,

Excellent piece of kit that has stood the test of time. Having borrowed a friends prior to committing to buy my own, I can vouch for the easy user interface, which is helped by the large easy read screen and touch screen control. Kit also comes with a remote for the hard to reach dashboard! I have mine mounted on the supplied oval base plate (which also fits my e-trex legend), and like to think that it doesn't look as bad as some of the suction cup type mountings. Also used on a motorcycle, colleagues having used it in europe and as far afield as Iceland with no hiccups.Go for the Garmin over the rivals if you want accessible routing and downloadable backup from Garmin. see the Garmin website.
