Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

This premium heart rate monitor with soft-fit strap is ideal for runners and riders who like to cover the miles or switch between sports in comfort. Training with a wireless heart rate monitor helps you get more from your workout. The digital monitor continuously tracks heart beats per minute to help you improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to a previous workout. Garmin’s ANT+ technology seamlessly pairs the heart rate monitor to your sportswatch without crosstalk with other equipment or other people’s monitors. Training with heart rate is a vital indicator for whether you’re working your body too hard or not hard enough. Relying on pace or speed data won’t give you the same accuracy – your heart rate is a better indicator of how hard your body is working. Your exertion level can vary depending on factors such as level of fitness, environmental elements like weather and temperature and your general wellbeing. Stress, fatigue and sickness can elevate your heart rate so a workout on these days may still feel difficult even if you reduce the speed or distance. Train in your optimal zone for current, average, highest, lowest, max and 5x zones. Once you’ve determined your max, key it into your Garmin Forerunner or Edge and it will calculate your zones and handle the workout for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does the job but not as comfy as Polar. 28 July 2010
Size Name:One Size
I bought this as I recently treated myself to a Forerunner 310XT. For years I've been using a Polar HRM which has been superbly reliable and the strap comfy and able to pick up data whilst positioned below my sports bra. Originally I thought I'd manage without the forerunner heart rate data, but I missed having that and didn't want to wear two watches in order to know my heart rate.

I ordered the premium strap as it was looked much more comfortable than the cheaper rigid plastic one. When it arrived it was clearly not going to be as comfortable as the polar strap (which is all soft material) as this one has two thin plastic patches as chest contacts. Still, I could live with that.

The biggest problem really is that it is less sensitive at detecting signals than the Polar - meaning it has to be worn higher on the chest. This means I have to tuck it under my sports bra (ouch) in order to get a signal. I should mention I work in cardiology and thus know for a fact that heart signals can easily be detected lower in the chest than this will detect - as demonstrated with the polar. By the time I've run my distance with plastic bits being held against my skin under the tight band of my sports bra I DEFINITELY know I'm wearing this!

It's a shame that one company can't get it all right. My polar HRM was great - but wouldn't send data to my mac. The forerunner is an amazing tool and mac compatible, but the strap really isn't as "premium" as I thought it would be. Perhaps Garmin need to find some product testers with breasts?

If I were a man it might get 4 or even 5 stars, but I'm not. I have the option of being uncomfortable, or not having data, which is a bit rubbish. Buy one if you're a bloke, that's my recommendation!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good HRM but... 30 Sep 2010
Size Name:One Size
This is a good HRM - comfortable and compatible with other Garmin products. However, it can be spooked by use when it is windy and you are wearign anything but teh tightest jersey. This seems to eb a known problem (check out the user forums on the Garmin website) but is a real irritation when you are using it for serious training. I'd still recommend it, but only just.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money 19 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase
As countless others have said, the monitor gives inconsistent readings especially if wearing wicking tops (let's face who wears cotton these days). It also leaves an abrasion under/near your sternum as the bottom of the monitor digs in. Garmin are a joke selling this pile of junk on the one hand and supporting elite sports teams on the other. Stick to Polar is best advice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Garmin Heart Rate Monitor 17 Sep 2012
Size Name:One Size|Verified Purchase
I have been using Garmin heart rate monitors for some years. Both my old ones finally stopped working and I purchased two new ones, with soft strap. The monitor works fine, but the design of the strap digs into my skin and leaves a nasty wound. Not happened before. Wear very loose if you buy this product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor support for the Foretrex 401 28 Jun 2011
Size Name:One Size|Verified Purchase
Updated 22 Dec 2011

The HRM is easy to put on and seems comfortable. It links without difficulty to my Foretrex 401. If all you want is a real time display of your heart rate then this will do the job, for a while. However, I've rated it as two stars because of the poor software support for the Foretrex 401 and the questionable longevity.

Even with the latest Foretrex software version 2.40 I've found that the heart rate data is only saved correctly in the ACTIVE LOG tracks and not in saved track data. Either the saved tracks contain a constant heart rate value (eg 82) or the heart rate data isn't even included. Then if you use Garmin Connect to upload the activities you have to do this manually, otherwise the heart rate data isn't included. You have to manually upload the Garmin/GPX/current/Current.gpx file from the Foretrex 401. This is all rather unfriendly and limits the usefulness of the HRM. I get the impression that Garmin don't really want to support the crossover market between navigation and fitness training.

I am now on my second strap. The first one became increasingly erratic and within six months I was having difficulty getting any meaningful heart rate reading. This seems to be a common problem and I think Garmin must be familiar with it as they sent me a replacement strap, rather than the complete heart rate monitor. Out of interest I compared the resistance between the strap electrode pads and the monitor unit contacts on the faulty strap and on the new, replacement strap. The new strap measured well under 5k ohms whereas the old strap measured around 15k ohms. I don't know whether than means the design has changed or whether the resistance increases over time. I guess I'll know in a few months!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best - buy it now. Nothing else compares. 4 Sep 2011
Size Name:One Size|Verified Purchase
Got this to replace the HRM strap that was shipped with my Garmin 305 three years ago. Worked immediately out of the packaging, I did not have to do a thing to get it connected. It is comfortable, adjustable and you don't know you are wearing it. Well worth the small premium over those hard plastic fronted straps. Imagine a small matchbox cut into three slices and this would be one the slices. Its really small. I have used loads of HRM straps over the years and this is by far the best I've had.

Buy it - you can't go wrong, especially from Amazon. Was delivered within three days. 5* Amazon and 5* Garmin, what a great combination :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Worn every day for a year and still works.
If you have large pecs you may find that the bottom of the strap chafes when you are running, you'll need to use plasters to prevent this happening. Apart from that works well. Read more
