Manufacturer's Description

Simple, safe, portable and affordable with optional traffic re-routing, the nüvi 215 is your personal travel assistant for life on the go. This simple, safety-minded navigator leads the way with turn-by-turn directions, lifetime traffic avoidance and a unique, advanced safety camera warning system to get you there on time and keep you safe on the road. Packed with up to millions of points of interest (POIs) and maps for the UK and Ireland, the 215 is compact, versatile and easy to use.

Simplicity and safety

Nüvi 215 comes preloaded with City Navigator NT map data for the UK and Ireland. Simply touch the colour screen, key in your destination and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn spoken directions, 2-D or 3-D mapping and smooth map updates. Digital elevation maps show shaded contours for an understanding of the surrounding terrain. In addition, nüvi 215 accepts custom points of interest such as traffic blackspots and post offices and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. With HotFix satellite prediction, Garmin calculates your position faster to get you there quicker.

'Where Am I?' gives you details about your location in a flash. Simply tap the car icon for your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, nearest address, contact details for your vehicle rescue service and directions to the closest hospital, police or petrol station.

Nüvi 215's advanced Cyclops safety camera database helps you travel with the confidence you are driving safely, responsibly and legally. As you approach one of hundreds of fixed, mobile and temporary safety cameras, variable limit or red light speed cameras across Europe, it gives an audible alert, overspeed warning and speed limit information.

Nüvi 215 also comes with Garmin Lock, an inventive anti-theft protection system that uses GPS to lock to a secure location of your choice.

Enhanced navigation

The nüvi 215 comes with photo navigation to revolutionise your sightseeing. Plan trips to landmarks and attractions simply and easily before you set off. Choose and save location-tagged photographs from millions of Google Panoramio pictures in a wish-list of places to visit. Then, at your leisure, select a photo destination on your Garmin for turn-by-turn directions straight to the scene.

Other built-in travel tools include a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, a currency and measurement converter, calculator and more.

Customise

Personalise your nüvi 215 with your choice of background photograph. To customise your screen further, select a new vehicle icon from the Garmin Garage. With a wide range of wheels including off-road vehicles, motorbikes and classic cars, you can now tailor your Garmin to suit your style.

Compact, bright navigation

Nüvi 215 has a sleek, slim design to fit comfortably in your pocket or purse. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes it convenient for navigation by car or foot with up to 4 hours' usage between charges.

View map detail, driving directions, photos and more in bright, brilliant colour. The sunlight-readable 3.5-inch display is easy to view - from any direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply awesome!, 6 July 2009

I searched long and hard for the perfect sat-nav, swamped with conflicting reviews and a plethora of features (most of which you'll never use#.
Over the years I've used TomTom #overpriced#, Navman #fiddly and unreliable# and Binatone #don't even go there). Finally, I stumbled across Garmin and all I can say is, "Wow!". Let me tell you why.
Firstly, it is simplicity itself. The 3.5" screen is perfectly compact and taken up almost entirely by the crystal clear map display. Additional trip information (most of which you'll never need) is "hidden", available at the press of a button. Your next direction is clearly displayed at the top of the screen and instead of a boring pointy arrow on the road, you get an actual car! Adding to the ease of use is the road you are travelling on, clearly highlighted in magenta. Additional side roads and streets are all there, but your main route is bright and bold.
In researching sat-navs, I looked at the main differentiators between TomTom and Garmin. The reigning opinion is that Garmin just about leads the way. Why? Because its maps are based upon ordinance survey coordinates and, as such, are much more accurate than TomTom's (which can be several metres out). Garmin is also far more reliable and quicker when it comes to calculating routes.
Taken a wrong route or think you know a quicker route? No problem. The Nuvi 215 recalculates your route with lightening speed and excellent accuracy.
A welcome bonus is the Bluetooth hands-free calling feature, although a word to the wise. Check the Garmin website for a list of compatible phones. This unit will not pair with my Samsung Omnia, so this may be a problem if hands-free calling is a must.

While I've only done a couple of fairly local journeys, I'm thoroughly impressed by the build quality, ease of use and fantastic accuracy of this sat-nav. Look no further if you want a simple, starter kit that actually fulfils the main purpose of sat-nav!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value Sat-Nav from Garmin!, 19 Aug 2010

I was looking for a basic sat-nav produced by a quality manufacturer. After reviewing various products I decided to purchase the Garmin Nuvi 215 unit because it had all the features I required and fell within the price range of > £100. I was very pleased to receive the unit within a couple of days. On unpacking it I noted it's solid appearance and the windscreen mounting bracket snapped together firmly. It was easy to set up out of the car powered by the onboard rechargeable battery (charges when connected to cigarette lighter socket in car). Because of it's relatively small size it was unobtrusive when mounted on the windscreen and did not obscure my vision. Performance on several UK journeys has been excellent! I would definately recommend this item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Garmin?, 7 Nov 2010
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 215 Satellite Navigation System - UK Mapping (Electronics)
The satnav has a cool in-built handsfree function which connects with your phone via bluetooth.
The mapping device is brilliant and gets you from A-B with no trouble.
However, this system does not seem to be able to get around traffic and show multiple routes to get to places which is really awful when trying to get around the M25 and not through it. So, it's great but always good to have a back-up plan as well or it might take you the long way.
