I wanted a sa-nav unit that I could use for walking, cycling and my motorbike. Actually this does the job pretty well, but its not as good as it could be. I also bought the Discoverer OS maps for the UK (50k:1) with the hope that they would help me with off-road navigation when walking / cycling.

I can definitely say that this unit is waterproof & can withstand being dropped on the ground. On my first cycling trip, it parted company with the bike, took two bounces on the canal path and fell into the canal - which was thankfully only about 4 feet deep. I managed to fish it out and it was still working when I got it to the surface. Full marks Garmin :-) I've now bought some better bike mounts, which are a lot more secure and I havent had a problem since.

Things I like: its waterproof, the battery lasts a reasonable time, is rechargeable and you can carry spares. It works with the Garmin Ordinance Survey Discoverer maps. You can create and upload courses to it from your PC. You can get some reasonable bike mounts for it. It works well as an on-road navigation device.

Things I dont like: there is no screen lock. Its easy to nudge the on/off switch, there is no lanyard / easy carry option. The display could have better definition. It can be difficult to see the footpaths / bridleways when reading the Ordinance Survey maps.

If you havent pre-programmed your off-road route, I would say that this unit (with the Discoverer OS maps) is a good supplement to a walk guide / paper OS map - it definitely helps you to see where you are. It can help you decide if you've gone the right way and where to go to next, but as the resolution of the display isn't that clear, is not always easy to see the finer map details / route options.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi 550 7 Dec 2010
Purchased as it allows navigation by UK Grid reference as well as postcodes.
Screen ok but not as good as similar sized Tom Tom. Does not appear to be affected by sun glare. Colours gentle on eys at night.

Free upgrade was only for one country despite unit being sold as full european mapping.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi 550 10 Nov 2011

Very good little Sat-Nav, has reliably lead me round London (oh horror) and to other places I have never been to before, it alters the route when I make mistakes and puts me back on track. It is very easy to programme. Instructions at the top visual area of the screen, are so good that one can navigate without the sound. The battery life is exceptionally good.
Great for off road adventures, in bike and walking mode, have successfully geo-cached with it.
My only criticism of this model is that the voice is a little muffled, this may be because it is waterproof.

4.0 out of 5 stars Redundant mapping on GPS sold as NEW. 7 July 2011
The Garmin Nuvi 550 (Full EU Mapping)is an excellent piece of equipment and suits my needs perfectly. It does everything it claims as far as I am concerned. It is easily changed between both my touring and sports motorcycles and has been subjected to both high speeds, various degrees of vibration and varying temperatures and weather conditions over periods averaging 6-7 hours constant riding. No problems experienced whatsoever. In my opinion an excellent choice for my requirements.

Unfortunately my GPS came with 2009 maps installed despite having been advertised as "NEW" and should have had the latest Garmin maps installed. I have reported this to the supplier, who has as yet failed to offer any kind of explanation and and am pursuing matters through Amazon complaints procedure. Garmin, on the other hand have been very helpful with the latest updates.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly an all rounder! 30 July 2012
    Verified Purchase
Problem: I walk and cycle almost as much as I drive, so wanted a machine for the car that had a good battery life as well for walking. Most car satnav's, particularly Tom Tom's seem to have very poor battery life, this claims 8 hours and has seemed to hold up well. However the supplied maps, fine for driving are not at all friendly for anything else. Presumably it needs £200 of OS maps to be useful. For example I can cycle in almost a straight line West about 1 mile to my mother through a park and bridleway. If I tell the Satnav I'm in a Car it takes me the correct route about 2 miles long heading south around the park and railway line. If I set it to walk or cycle it takes me 2.3 miles heading North. I finally found [...] and from there a great guy who has made the UK routable ones available including contours etc. These free maps took me straight through the park the way I would actually go. Downside is they are not as easily searchable - i.e. no postcode, etc search. Easy answer is to put them on SD card and use Garmin maps to find a location, add it to Favourites and then switch to OSM maps to route and use. The OSM maps are also much more up to date and detailed.

Other downside is I struggled to update the Europe maps as it complained of not enough memory; it wouldn't let me download anything bigger than the 62MB free on the Garmin even though the update would overwrite the 1.6GB already there. Eventually I backed the machine up and deleted the lot. My wife had no such problem on the Tom Tom she bought. Both of us wanted Europe as well as UK and do not see why we should not be able to load the updated maps for what we paid for. In any case a total of less than 2GB on a machine of this price and the current cost of memory is fairly appalling.
