Navigation and Entertainment with Ease
For starters, the Nuvi 360 includes a high-sensitivity integrated GPS receiver that offers exceptional performance and reception. Preloaded software features maps of Europe or North America, and it includes automatic routing, 2D or 3D map perspective, turn-by-turn voice directions that speak street names (in English or Spanish), and a fingertip touch screen interface -- making navigation as easy as it gets.

But navigation is just the beginning. Like the Nuvi 350, the Nuvi 360 also includes many entertainment and travel tools including an MP3 player, audio book player, JPEG picture viewer, travel alarm, and currency converters.

The Nuvi 360 features a bright, 2.8 x 2.1-inch TFT display with white backlight for easy readability. At 3.87 x 2.91 x 0.87-inches (WxHxD) and just 5.1 ounces, the unit is small enough to be placed on the dashboard with the included suction mount, or into your pocket for easy transportability. The unit also features Garmin Lock -- an advanced anti-theft feature that disables the unit from performing any functions until you type in a specific four-digit PIN or take the unit to a predetermined location. A built-in lithium ion battery will give you up to eight hours of power, and an included 12/24 volt adapter cable will let you run the navigator off your vehicle's power. An AC battery charger is also included.

A built-in Travel Kit that includes sample MP3s and audio books will get you started with entertainment, and with the unit's SD memory card expansion slot you can add optional software, such as language and travel guides. A USB port is also included for loading and updating data.

4.0 out of 5 stars NUvi 360 vs TomTom, 19 Jun 2006
By D. Buckman "Danno" (Surrey.UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had the Nuvi about a week now so have given it the briefest of tests, but here's my initial opinions anyway.

The maps - vast improvement on the TomTom (from a UK point of view). Much more accurate and up to date with more detail.

Sat-Signal - faster acquisition of satellites and more reliable (I havent lost signal once yet in my travels (TomTom used to regularly lose signal)

Size - I was never bothered about size originally but the Nuvi being so small is a real bonus. It looks very neat in my car and is easy to remove and slip in a back pocket. In its provided case it looks like you're carrying a wallet.

I also really like the bar across the top of the map screen. It constantly tells you where you are and where you're heading. It has the instructions before, during and after the speech and if you miss the announcement (when you have your `The Feeling' CD too loud) you've got it right there in front of you. When you're not in navigation mode, it also tells you of upcoming roads. The text to speech is also excellent, seamlessly reading out road names - and even reads the name of your favourite when you arrive i.e. "Arrive at Mum and Dad's on the left". All very nice!

Any downsides compared with the old TomTom? Well for some reason I still have a hankering for Tom. Something about the way the maps are displayed graphically on the TomTom appeals to me more, with the Garmins looking more child-like. The lack of UK focus in some of the features too is frustrating. The audio books etc have distinct US leaning with the included leaflets stating prices in dollars etc, which is frustrating. The Garmin UK website too is very basic. But, these are all superficial things, because when it comes down to it, the Garmin does a better job at what its supposed to be doing - satellite navigation. It gets me from A to B without losing signal, with clear instructions always on screen, and even tells me the side of the road when I arrive. I miss the friendliness of the TomTom but based on reliability the Nuvi is a winner. It's my new travelling companion. (www.onlydanno.co.uk/?p=76)

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly there?, 30 Jul 2006
By B. Singh (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first thing that strikes you is the sleek lines with minimalistic look. I think a lot of us have bought it, more for this feature than others. The lack of dedicated buttons is at first a hinderance but as one gets into the learning curve it becomes easier to juggle with the various features & options (usually mentioned feature is the lack of a volume control button: its only 2 buttons away from any screen) so it's a quick option, actually. The accuracy with WAAS/EGNOS switched on is about 16-25 feet in the UK, so it's by today's standards pretty good (not considering the US 5-10 feet). The display is a bit jerky but while driving it's not a big issue as one's speed is not too fast for the display to appear jarring. I think if Garmin improve on their processor speed this would settle. Also if one uses the NORMAL setting in the Map display rather than MORE or MOST option, it becomes less of an issue. TOMTOM 910's refresh rate is better, but they have other issues with their mapping. It's never a perfect world, it's it?

The TTS (Text to Speech) feature is quite a let down. I think it's still in it's infancy with a bit of a garbling of some street names which keeps you wondering what did Emily say? This invariably clarified if one quickly glanced on the top message panel with the last mentioned road/street name. The pronunciation garbling improves slightly if one selects the Australian lady! Also the voice clarity (read frequency response) & volume of the voice prompts improve if one switches off the TTs feature. I think the TTS is too much a drain on the processing power of the Nuvi 360. The error re-calculation was quicker with the TTS switched off. And infact, for me its much easier if some one told me to turn left in .2 miles rather than turn left at Wolsley road which to begin with you can only see after you have turned into Wolsley road! Not a problem of Garmin I suspect!

The other features i.e., mp3 player, phrase book, Audio books are only gimmicks. Why will I listen to Brahms on a tinny speaker when I can very well do so on my Blaupunkt? Well it's a Personal navigation assistant so may be one can argue?? The POIs which come pre-loaded are good but could get better, with some good resturants missed out. It's a feature I am not very sure how many of us will use eventually. I am sure I'll book a table in advance much before I sit in my car. But it's a good feature for Fuel pumps, highway stops, etc.

The power cable is fixed to the mount. Traffic Master is attached on the side with a USB jack, an external antenna attaches on the flip open antenna, an external speaker fixes on the righ hand side. Garmin didn't really employ a very intelligent designer who could have all these in a single modular jack with a single cable so that your expensive car didn't look like it belonged to a geek with a cheap DIY job.

Good signal coverage in doors & under complex bypasses. Not tested under tunnels by me, but I am sure, no GPS can work unless connected to the speedometer & gyro (synthetic calculation).

On the whole I'll still recommend this because even though our demands have evolved much more then what our Garmins designers can imagine, buts the performance is pretty good compared to other units.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice tool but some glaring issues, 27 Dec 2006
By M. Williams (Traveller) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've been using my nuvi360 for 2 months now, over quite a range of driving conditions all over England, with a side-trip to Dublin.

1. A number of cities I've visited have pedestrianised streets (that are not new) which my device keeps trying to lead me down (e.g. Bath, Newcastle-upon-Tyne). Newcastle also has "no-car" lanes which prevent right-hand turns in many situations in the city. The 2005 maps on my device do not cater for these limitations. Also, when I go to British Airways HQ at Waterside near Heathrow (opened 1998), the device thinks I'm out in the middle of a field....
2. I hate having to spell out the name of the desired country nearly every time I start the device. What a waste of time!
3. I wish it properly supported full UK postcodes, not just the first 4 characters.
4. You need a function to avoid particular routes. The UK M1 is having some major roadwork done and while trying to avoid it to get over to the M40, the device just kept trying to find detours leading right back to the M1.
4. While driving down the M1 between Newcastle and London, the nuvi decided I had to go drive around some backstreets near the M62 junction before rejoining the M1! Most peculiar. (It's on the fastest route setting, not shortest). This has happened on 3 journeys between these cities.
5. When visiting a new town, I'd like to be able to instruct the unit to take me to the town centre (e.g. the main post office) without having to supply a street name.
6. The Garmin website is awful. A mapping company with a hard-to-navigate website! It frequently drops you into the US website, thus supplying inappropriate information.
--------------------------------------------------------
An update after driving through 20 countries around Europe. Mostly good but in some places the maps were horribly wrong (Sicily, Italy around Naples, Norway) or extremely sketchy (Hungary, Lithuania, in other places complete highway systems are missing). After further driving in the UK and a map update in April, I still found that it was very very wrong in a number of places like Glasgow (entire downtown one-way streets are wrong, and they are missing a bridge over the Clyde!).

Detour function continues to frustrate as I can't tell it to avoid a particular area or road. Usually it just calculates a spot further along my route to do a U-turn back to the original route.
