Find Fuel-efficient Routes

nüvi 1440 helps you save fuel and money with ecoRoute - Garmin’s innovative green feature that calculates the most fuel-efficient route, tracks fuel usage and more. You can choose to take the “less fuel” option as a routing preference and, when selected, nüvi will determine if a more fuel efficient route exists based upon road speed and vehicle acceleration data. ecoRoute helps you develop more efficient driving habits, calculates trip cost and enables accurate expense reporting too.

Complete Door-to-Door Navigation

With its pedestrian navigation capabilities and sleek design, nüvi 1440 is your perfect travel companion in and out of the car. Download optional cityXplorer content and navigate new cities like a local. Garmin’s enhanced pedestrian mode gives you directions for walking including footpaths and shortcuts through parks – places you wouldn’t be accessing while in your car. It also tells you where to catch trains, buses and tubes (dependent on the city) and how long it will take to reach your destination. cityXplorer even contains public transport timetables to ensure you arrive at the station on time and help avoid long waits (dependent on the city).

Get Turn-by-Turn Directions

üvi 1440 has an intuitive interface that greets you with two simple questions: "Where To?" and "View Map." Touch the 5-inch super-wide colour screen to easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions with spoken street names for extra route awareness - no need to look at the sat nav screen.
It comes preloaded with City Navigator® NT street maps for Western Europe (24 countries), preloaded points of interest (POIs) and speed limits for most major roads. With 1440's extra-large display, you get over-sized on-screen buttons and larger icons for even greater clarity. You also can upload custom points of interest (POIs) for your favourite destinations. And with HotFix® satellite prediction, nüvi calculates your position faster to get you there quicker.

Where am I?

The Where am I? emergency locator is a safety feature that can be very helpful if you break down or need a local service urgently. Simply tap the car icon on the map screen to view your exact coordinates, address and junction, contact details for vehicle recovery services and get directions to your nearest hospitals, police and petrol stations.

Go Beyond Navigation

Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 1440 features many travel tools, including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. With photo navigation, you can download location-tagged pictures from Garmin Connect™ Photos and navigate straight to the scene – ideal for getting to places without an address such as a landmark or informal meeting place or for recreating a memorable holiday or road trip. Download custom voices and vehicles from our Garmin Extras collection, record and speak your own directions with Garmin’s free VoiceStudio™ software and enhance your travel experience with optional plug-in microSD™ cards for interactive tour guides and details of and directions to reviewed and rated destinations.

    garmin 1440 sat nav 20 Sep 2011
    By Rob
After reading quite a number of reviews I decided this was the sat nav for me,an easy to use and very user friendly piece of kit with some very nice and useful features . On a recent trip to Brittany France it proved to be invaluable,I could not have managed without it as the local roads where a maze of twisting country lanes and a vast amount of roundabouts,it would have been a real nightmare without this great sat nav,In Britain it proved to be just as reliable.A very nice piece of equipment that I can thoroughly recommend .

    Garmin Nuvi 1440 17 Sep 2011
    By Eric
Had a sat nav installed in my old car which was ok. Only thing it didn't do was post codes. So when I purchased my new car and it didn't have a sat nav I bought the Garmin Nuvi 1440 and it's absolutely brilliant. Only used it 3 times but it has 100% got me to my destination.

I have used TomTom car, bike and PDA satnavs for years and tend to use one most days. As I get older, I'd like something that is easier to see clearly and the Garmin was at a good price so I thought I'd give it a try. I also don't want to be locked into a product that doesn't allow me to use independent POI suppliers.

The good - 5 inch screen is great and you can see more of the map, you can load custom POIs (e.g. speed cams) via the POI Loader app. This model has a BluTooth connection for hands-free calls, however the mike is dependent on the ambient noise levels in the car. There are probably less user configurable options available when compared to TomTom.

The not so good - configuring POIs with warnings is not as straight forward as with TomTom and requires some internet research but the info is out there. There aren't as many settings on this model as on similarly priced TomTom models e.g. if you don't like the default colour schemes then tough. All custom POIs are loaded in one go and overwrite what was there previously - you can't just toggle them on or off easily. TomTom models plan (marginally) quicker and more direct routes.

In summary, I don't regret getting this model at this price. It can occasionally lose itself briefly (but so can TomTom), it isn't idiot proof and can send you the wrong way (neither is TomTom). Map updates are always out of date (so are TomTom's). In my view the perfect SatNav would be a mixture of the best features of the TomTom and Garmin Nuvi models and would be reasonably priced (and it doesn't exist) and that's why I give it 4 stars.

    Not 5 inch screen
Have just receive this so can't comment on how it works or rate it but I bought it because it is advertised as a 5 inch screen but it is actually 41/4 inches, slightly annoying.
