I went through two or three 3rd party chargers for my Garmin, to find that none of them would charge and power the device at the same time- until I discovered that the original Garmin adaptor supplies 9v power, not the standard 5v USB.
This is why the 3rd party ones don't work properly.

This one works. End of. Powers and charges the device, has the angled connector so it's tidy and detaches easily, everything. Just buy this one and be done with it!

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1490TV around a year ago. The car charger that came with it, while fully adequate, had a rectangular strip about a couple of inches long which housed something which must make it different from any other normal mini-USB charger. The strip then promptly started breaking up (it is just two bits of plastic clicked together with a circuit board in the middle). Especially so as the cable is overly long and the strip hangs around where the vents, radio, air con controls etc are.

Inevitably it broke, I taped it together and it ran for a few months more and then gave up a few weeks ago.

I ordered a cheap one on eBay that promised compatibility but did no such thing although it is was mini-USB. Without the important bit in the middle, it just thinks that it is connected to a PC and goes into synch mode.

I ordered this one after reading the reviews and I love this one!

Whatever circuitry is needed is built in in the little round thing near the cigarette lighter end probably. The end bit is nicely curved so the cable doesn't tug (unlike the one that came in the box), actually says Garmin on the charger and just looks solidly built, works well and is a great price!

5* product, great delivery time and price.

Go for it if your Garmin has a mini-USB connector.

The item received was not as shown. I already have two coil lead chargers which are really short and connectors snap off easily. My wife has an original Garmin one and the picture of one advertised shows this, hence the reason for ordering. Companies that do not supply products shown do themselves and Amazon no good at all

As others have found - Not a Garmin product, and not a right-angled plug so it could not be used. Item returned and refunded (with some difficulty).

To agree with Vic's comment, the item I received is not what is pictured. Instead of an L-shaped plug like the photo and the original Garmin adapter, this one came with a straight plug. I could have found a straight one else where for less...

My charger also broke leaving half the charger stuck in the lighter and fused numerous parts of my car

Straight connector and not L shaped. Due to short cable I over stretched the cable and connector broke first time I used it. Not impressed!

The charger has a good build quality (better than the original I think) and a good fit. Crucially it allows you to charge and use the sat nav at the same time (something that I did not even think about until I read other reviews for similar products).

Contrary to other reviews, the unit I received was as advertised - it has a 90 degree connector so it fits my Nuvi on the back and side sockets.

I fully recommends this product.

I have recently purchased this to replace a third party charger with a straight connector. As supplied, it was a genuine Garmin product, with angled connector as shown, and pits perfectly with both the suction mount and the (brilliant) Garmin friction dashboard mount. All at about half the price that Garmin would charge!
