I purchased this unit to work with my Nuvi 3690T. I have a 2009 Volvo S80, which is not listed on the compatibility list, but the setup works perfectly. The initial setup involves waiting for the unit to automatically configure itself to the car system. This can take a couple of minutes so patience is required!

The question is: is this device worth the money? If, like me, there is a geek element to you, then yes. All sorts of engine parameters can be monitored and the unit gives a continuous assessment of your driving style, economy wise. It even tells you how much each trip has just cost you when you switch off the engine. However, I don't think this unit will teach the average experienced driver much about how to save fuel. We already know what style of driving will increase our consumption. Common sense tells us that the wrong gear, heavy use of the accelerator or high-speed driving will bump up our fuel bill.

For the price, this unit works well and does exactly what it says it does but I would recommend that you ask yourself what exactly you want it for.

After reading two positive reviews and one less than positive review I decided to take the plunge and purchase the Ecoroute HD. I also read reviews and the product blurb on the Garmin website and decided it was exactly what I wanted to help me monitor and reduce my fuel consumption. The selling point being that it connects to the car engine and tells the Sat Nav (In my case a nuvi 3970T) all the necessary data (as stated on the Garmin website and I quote... "ecoRoute HD uses the OBDII buss to monitor the engine computer then uses this data to work out your fuel economy. Even if your car does not have a dashboard computer.")

So I read everything in detail and checked compatibilty of both my car and my Sat Nav and finding everything was stated as compatible went ahead and purchased.

After plugging it in and connecting it to the Sat Nav (a very easy process) and checking that it was indeed sending information (the gauges all seemed to work). I set off on a trip to test out the fuel monitoring. All seemed well at first as it was counting fuel used and giving me average MPG etc... But on closer examination I realised that the figures didnt entirely make sense. For instance, if I were travelling at a constant 50mph I would get an reading on the graph of around 65mpg. But if I maintained 50 mph and went up a long hill (necessitating pressing the accelerator much harder to keep the speed the same) the figure didnt change, mor did it change if I were going downhill with my foot almost off the pedal... The Sat Nav was actually guesstimating my fuel consumption based on speed and acceleration alone and I found it did exactly the same thing if I unplugged the Ecoroute HD and just used the Sat Nav alone.

I really wanted one of these, as the extra information provided/dials appealed to my inner geek. Unfortunately, after an initial couple of weeks of fun, the unit dropped the blue tooth connection to my Nuvi 2595 & stubbornly refused to reconnect. To be frank, it had only connected about 4 times out of every 5 journeys as it was, but this time the little green light kept flashing & there was nothing I could do to change its' mind.

I got a replacement from another Amazon seller, but this one had the same problem pretty much from the outset. It connected to my Nuvi, but refused completely to link to my engine management system, & then dropped the Nuvi connection & I was back to square 1.

A pity....as I said, it was great while it worked!

I was excited when I came across this product because I have a fondness for instrumentation; the more information, the better.

I immediately bought one after checking that it was compatible with both my Garmin 3790T and my car, a 2011 diesel Toyota Avensis.

At first I was impressed with the real-time view of my fuel consumption and the feedback it gave me on my driving style in the form of Eco Challenge scores.

However, after a few weeks, I began to notice that the figures it gave me were wildly wrong. The average fuel consumption figures were far higher than what I calculated from how much fuel I used to fill the tank, the journey distances were far higher than my trip odometer read (e.g. 67km reported for a 53km journey), and my Eco Challenge scores gradually declined, getting as low as 2 or 5 for speed, despite my driving not changing much.

I contacted Garmin support about the problem in April and they confirmed that my car was compatible, but could not explain the problems. They got me to record log files of some journeys, which they passed to their software helpdesk, but the conclusion was just that I should reset the 3790T and make sure the software was up-to-date.

This made no discernible difference, except that my Eco Challenge scores went back up, only to start declining again.

I was last in contact with Garmin support in late May and I believe the case is still under investigation, but they have given no indication that they will ever have a resolution.

I cannot recommend this product in the absence of a definite explanation and fix from Garmin.
