A lot of promise but..., 16 Aug 2007
This review is from: Garmin GTM 12 FM TMC Traffic Receiver. Compatible with Garmin nuvi 300 / 300T / 310 / 310 Deluxe / 350 / 360 / 360T and the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 / 2820 / 7200 / 7500 / c340. (Electronics)
I originally ordered one of these after I'd taken a trip that should have taken 2 hours, and it took closer to 5.
When It arrived I eagerly connected it to my Nuvi 350 to see what happened. Straight away I saw a blue traffic icon appear on the main menu of the Nuvi, and I clicked it to see the traffic reports, and unfortunatly this was the start of the disappointment. No traffic messages at all. "Ok", I thought "I'll see how it goes tomorrow". My journey to work takes me on the A1, A406, A41 and M25, some of the busiest roads in the UK and in the middle of the coverage area I'd checked on the gamin web site (https://shop.garmin.com/fmtraffic/select_service_plan.asp?L=EN&CR=2&PR=2)
No reports all the way to work. After contacting Garmin technical support I found there are a number of well known issues with the product.
Firstly, if you have a car with a heated windscreen, or heat reflected coating don't bother. The windscreen will block the FM signal making the unit worthless. (I know most Mercs and Citroens are affected by this)
Secondly, the unit is not a strong receiver. As there are very specific rules about the transmission power of radio signals in the UK, reception is a big problem. Other units that use Trafficmaster usually patch into the car's external aerial, so can receive a much weaker signal. Not these I'm afraid.
Thirdly the coverage is not quite accurate. Whilst information is gathered about the roads in the coverage area, that is not a guarantee that information is broadcast in those areas. Checking a few forums soon showed that there are some big holes in the UK where you wont get any coverage.
From what I've read if you are considering this unit go for the GTM 10 or 11 which will allow you to connect to another aerial. Even then be prepared for a little disappointment about the coverage you will get.
I wish I could provide more information about the routing/ traffic avoidance capabilities of this product, but as it has still not received any messages I can't comment.

GTM 12 TRAFFIC RECIEVER, 17 Jan 2010
This review is from: Garmin GTM 12 FM TMC Traffic Receiver. Compatible with Garmin nuvi 300 / 300T / 310 / 310 Deluxe / 350 / 360 / 360T and the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 / 2820 / 7200 / 7500 / c340. (Electronics)
PLUGGED IT INTO MY ZUMO 550 ON THE BIKE AND WITHIN SECONDS THE TRAFFIC ALERTS WERE THERE,ZOOMED OUT AND COULD SEE THE ALERTS FOR ALL OVER THE UK AND I LIVE IN CORNWALL SO SIGNAL STRENGTH WAS NOT AN ISSUE.

It just works, 19 July 2009
This review is from: Garmin GTM 12 FM TMC Traffic Receiver. Compatible with Garmin nuvi 300 / 300T / 310 / 310 Deluxe / 350 / 360 / 360T and the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 / 2820 / 7200 / 7500 / c340. (Electronics)
Plugged in and straight away I had all the traffic for the whole UK. Admittedly I don't have a heated windscreen but it warns of that on the garmin site if you dig around. It is important to make sure you get a UK spec item, otherwise you might have to pay to see the traffic. Great purhcase. Coverage seems solid.
