Garmin GPSMAP 62st – Europe Topo

Explore The Terrain

GPSMAP 62st
GPSMAP 62st

When the terrain gets tough, you can depend on the GPSMAP 62st handheld navigator to guide you through. Inspired by the powerful GPSMAP 60 series, this rugged and waterproof GPS combines high-precision accuracy with high functionality to brave the demands of any terrain you dare to tackle – wherever the adventure, whatever the activity.

Its tilt-compensated 3-axis compass helps you get your orientation and points you towards your destination even when you're standing still or not holding the navigator flat, whilst the barometric altimeter enables you to track changes in atmospheric atmosphere to pinpoint your exact altitude. View elevation and profile on the altimeter screen and plot barometric pressure over time to keep an eye on changing weather conditions. GPSMAP 62st features a 2.6-inch sunlight-readable colour screen with built-in European recreation map showing street level detail (approx 1:100,000 scale), so you can navigate anywhere with ease. With photo navigation, you can download pictures from Garmin Connect Photos and navigate straight to the scene.

Keep Your Fix

With a quad helix antenna and high-sensitivity, WAAS/EGNOS-enabled GPS receiver with HotFix satellite prediction, GPSMAP 62st has unparalleled reception to locate your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep valleys. The advantage is clear - whether you're in deep woods or just near tall buildings and trees, you can count on GPSMAP 62st to help you find your way when you need it the most.

Enhance Your Adventures

With space to store up to 2000 waypoints and 200 routes, GPSMAP 62st's detailed route planning and tracking helps you navigate from point-to-point and keep track of your journey as you go. As you navigate to a destination on an active track, you can view upcoming elevation changes together with waypoints and key stages along the route for a clear picture of the journey ahead. And with customisable display, you can tailor GPSMAP 62st's dashboard to show you the details you need on your adventure. You can also share your routes, tracks, waypoints and geocaches wirelessly with compatible Garmin GPS handhelds.

Adventure Further

Adding more maps is easy with Garmin's wide array of detailed topographic, marine and road maps, which can be loaded to internal memory. Your GPSMAP 62st is also compatible with BirdsEye satellite imagery which allows you to see the terrain in terrific clarity and high resolution detail (quality and coverage varied worldwide). Almost perfect! 13 Sep 2011
I am a long time garmin fan as their GPS's seem to do what they say on the tin and stand the test of time. I have a Nuvi in the car, but for years (15+?!) I have owned a 12XL from the outdoor range and they are brilliant tools. Rugged, waterproof and easy to use.

It was time to upgrade, GPS receivers and antenna design has moved along and so has power consumption so I was drawn in to the 62 series after a friend bought one recently.

Perhaps its because I was making a major leap in products but I find the 62ST to be excellent. Good battery life (at least several days holiday usage before a charge), easy to use, and most of the time an easy to see screen.

The screen is the main let down though, as its quite low-res and hard to see in dim lighting without the backlight on a battery draining full setting. In bright sunlight its fine as the screen is reflective and easy to view.

Lots mapping options, I bought the OS Discoverer south England from Garmin as a download, and put it on a 16GB Micro SD card in the 62ST (sandisk). I was also able to load City Navigator as well, and you can select between them on the unit. The turn by turn mapping works well in the car as well, but be aware there is no speaker so you get no voice prompts just a beep before each turn but its works well enough.

Hoping this lasts me another 15 years as my 12XL did!

Would be 5* with a higher resolution screen.

    GPSMAP62st 17 May 2011
I own a GPSmap60csx and have upgraded to GPSmap62st because of the extensive range of compatable full OS 1:50 and 1:25k mapping. At the same time I purchased the Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50k preprogrammed micro SD card, not cheap but you get what you pay for. Follow Garmin's advice and technical help and the unit and mapping are excellent pieces of kit.
Regarding the preprogrammed cards, do not use Mapsource software to download data, as this may overwrite the card so you need to save the data to mass storage in case you need to recover, Garmin can't replace lost or corrupted data on your card. However, you can only recover the data back to the preloaded card and not make free copies on blank cards, (one license only per purchase!),so losing your card would be expensive.I have not used the download from site purchase system which costs the same, so I can't advise which is best ,ask Garmin if in doubt.
The safe operating software for data transfer to the 62 series is Base Camp, this works just fine and will transfer routes and waypoints that you created and saved to PC from the 60 or 62 series. The software uploads the map from the unit when you connect it to the PC via USB. You can then work on tracks, routes and waypoints and transfer back to the unit.
I am confident enough at last but never leave my paper mapping and compass at home just in case of breakdown. I look forward to using this system out on the hills.

Does all it says it does. Excellent battery life. I chose this as I did not want a touchscreen model for outdoor use. Very quick to fix on satellites. Map detail good.
