This seems like a great gadget but it's actually a fantastic tool. Lots of support from Garmin when you finally get your head around what you really need it for. Very robust and waterproof and it looks great on the bike although the cradle that came packaged was not the right one, so had to reorder. Amazon came right in the end. Thumbs up to this must have.

This my second gps, excluding sat nav's. It's brilliant. I also purchased the europe nt maps for added search functionality & I love it. My main use is for Geocaching & it's far easier with this type of gps than my old Magellen. Especially if you use GSAK, do a Google & dowload it for free. It takes just a couple of minutes to dowload very large quantities of caches to GSAK & then just a couple of seconds from there to the gps.

I have no problems at all with the gps. Just Garmin's over protective policy on their maps. I wanted to buy their UK OS maps. Obviously, they'll sell them to me (not cheap)but they won't allow me to install them on the same card as I've installed their europe nt maps. How bizarre is that? They think it acceptable that you turn off your gps, remove the back cover & batteries, then change cards. Well I'm out in all weather & I aint doing that.

So sure buy the gps. (I'd buy another tomorrow if I lost this one.) But take a look here [Talky Toaster] for your mapping.

From the time or ordering to delivery was a bit of a saga with the estimated delivery date being missed by close to 3 weeks (possibly due to Cypriot postal efficiency I really don't know). Having assumed the Garmin was lost, Amazon were superb in sending me a replacement to a UK address which arrived very promptly. Whilst in the UK, I was told that my unit had arrived at long last in Cyprus. The return of the unit became another saga, long saga which resulted in the return being effected by Royal Mail post and the cost of postage being refunded to me. Amazon were great really but their returns process was hugely questionable and easier to send by normal post. However, the 5 * rating is a lot more to do with the unit itself.
I was not familiar with the use of handheld's and this was purchased as I wanted to plan numerous walks in the Paphos area on Google Earth and download them into the Garmin unit to use on the walks. As a consequence of my lack of knowledge and experience, it took several visits to You Tube or web articles, trial and error to finally crack the nut so to speak (Garmin would do well to supply an idiots guide to help people new to the game).
Having downloaded Basecamp I have now managed to download and upload planned or walked tracks and, to track a walk in progress. I almost feel that I have managed to land on the moon at last! Having got there, I have to say I am very pleased with the unit as a whole. The screen can be difficult to see in bright sunlight but it is not a ball breaker by any means. The unit is compact and as such, a larger screen is difficult to envisage unless you get the touch screen unit which I did not want.
As I learn more about the unit and its logic, it can only get better.Garmin GPSMAP 62ST Handheld GPS Europe

I own a GPSmap60csx and have upgraded to GPSmap62st because of the extensive range of compatable full OS 1:50 and 1:25k mapping. At the same time I purchased the Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50k preprogrammed micro SD card, not cheap but you get what you pay for. Follow Garmin's advice and technical help and the unit and mapping are excellent pieces of kit.
Regarding the preprogrammed cards, do not use Mapsource software to download data, as this may overwrite the card so you need to save the data to mass storage in case you need to recover, Garmin can't replace lost or corrupted data on your card. However, you can only recover the data back to the preloaded card and not make free copies on blank cards, (one license only per purchase!),so losing your card would be expensive.I have not used the download from site purchase system which costs the same, so I can't advise which is best ,ask Garmin if in doubt.
The safe operating software for data transfer to the 62 series is Base Camp, this works just fine and will transfer routes and waypoints that you created and saved to PC from the 60 or 62 series. The software uploads the map from the unit when you connect it to the PC via USB. You can then work on tracks, routes and waypoints and transfer back to the unit.
I am confident enough at last but never leave my paper mapping and compass at home just in case of breakdown. I look forward to using this system out on the hills.

I am a long time garmin fan as their GPS's seem to do what they say on the tin and stand the test of time. I have a Nuvi in the car, but for years (15+?!) I have owned a 12XL from the outdoor range and they are brilliant tools. Rugged, waterproof and easy to use.

It was time to upgrade, GPS receivers and antenna design has moved along and so has power consumption so I was drawn in to the 62 series after a friend bought one recently.

Perhaps its because I was making a major leap in products but I find the 62ST to be excellent. Good battery life (at least several days holiday usage before a charge), easy to use, and most of the time an easy to see screen.

The screen is the main let down though, as its quite low-res and hard to see in dim lighting without the backlight on a battery draining full setting. In bright sunlight its fine as the screen is reflective and easy to view.

Lots mapping options, I bought the OS Discoverer south England from Garmin as a download, and put it on a 16GB Micro SD card in the 62ST (sandisk). I was also able to load City Navigator as well, and you can select between them on the unit. The turn by turn mapping works well in the car as well, but be aware there is no speaker so you get no voice prompts just a beep before each turn but its works well enough.

Hoping this lasts me another 15 years as my 12XL did!

Would be 5* with a higher resolution screen.
