The Garmin Oregon 300 is a good GPS for general leisure activities, but even using the available OpenStreetMaps-based map files leaves the on-screen map detail patchy around the UK. Although many large towns and some villages are well covered when it comes to street mapping, the lack of off-road features is a real disappointment when out walking or off-road cycling.

Adding this memory card updates the GPS to provide a full OS 1:50,000 scale map overlay, with woods, marshes, beaches, rivers and streams, bridges, contour lines and all of the other landscape details that you would expect. It transforms the functionality of the device, encouraging you to explore the area when out walking or on the bike.

Searching for a location is a very useful extra, with the card containing data on street and even house locations for the entire area covered, and even many named landmark features. Wondering where that holiday cottage is? Type in the address and it'll show you exactly. Very cool.

A few warnings for potential purchasers:
1.) Update the GPS firmware.
Out of the box, my GPS and OS map card combination looked terrible. The maps were blocky, and obscured by the roads from the vector maps. It was also slow to redraw, making scrolling frustrating. An update via the Garmin web updater improved image quality significantly and got rid of the road clutter, but it's worth noting that this product still won't look as good as some OS mapping apps you can get for the current hi-res, high power smartphones. However, it's still good enough, and the GPS is rugged and waterproof.

2.) The data isn't up to date.
Although the maps don't change that often, the card was purchased in 2010 and has 2008 data, but some of the data seems even older.

The title says it all. This really makes a difference.
As a enthusiastic Geocacher this addon is so useful and makes tracking much more interactive.
Okay it's not cheap but it does - in many respects, take the place of an awful lot of OS Maps and they're certainly not cheap!
Obviously being displayed on a small screen has its limitations but it is more than good enough.
This works for me and I am very glad I invested in this product.

Good resolution on screen, accurate mapping and relatively easy to follow even when zoomed right in, however there is some "fuzziness" when zoomed to the max.
Well worth the money for every day recreational walking - but as ever - always take a paper map as backup!!!

Gives a good OS coverage, fine for cycling and just enough for walks but would be better at 1:25 scale.

Anybody used to using OS mapping and a compass will find this software and the Garmin GPS very useful. Great to plan walks on the PC with memory maps and down load the planned route onto this garmin mapping.
