Finally, an alternative to awkward pedometers and cycling computers. The Forerunner 201 offers athletes an easy-to-read display and integrated GPS satellite receiver that provides precise speed, distance, and pace data--all in one compact unit that straps to your wrist.

It's a lightweight, accurate training assistant with performance tracking, auto-lap, auto-pause and more. And because it is a high quality Garmin GPS device, you get many of the features GPS users have come to rely on, such as precise latitude, longitude, altitude data.

Choose either the 201 model for rechargeable power or the 101 if you prefer to use 2 AAA batteries. The Forerunner 201 is easy to use right out of the box and delivers the benefits of GPS technology at an affordable price.

For people who are passionate about their exercise and training, Garmin has added something special to the Forerunner 201 called the Virtual Partner. The feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance.

The Forerunner 201 has a variety of helpful tracking, monitoring, and navigational features. The History function enables you to view your workout statistics broken down by individual days, cumulative weeks, or your entire workout history (if you track different workouts during the same day, they'll be broken out as different laps). You can even view a map of your route. And much like other GPS units, you can save waypoints (called "locations" in Forerunner parlance) to mark the coordinates of a place you want to return to later.

You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.

Almost as important as the training device itself are the accessories to integrate it with your active lifestyle. If you're into cycling, the best way to keep an eye on your GPS while you ride is with a bike mount bracket that straps to the handlebars of your bike, motorcycle, or whatever you're travelling with for easy viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Garmin 201 Forerunner, 20 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I read quite a few reviews on this before I bought it. I've now had mine for about 2 months & it is FANTASTIC!!

Never had a GPS before but my pedometer was not accurate enough for running as it only measures stride length which can vary. I would never go back to Pedometers or ordinary sports watches, this one does it all.

Two of my favourite features is that you can set it so that the timer stops automatically if you stop, which was a big selling point for me as I didn't want to be fiddling with it all the time during runs.

The light feature is very good & on dark nights you can leave it on permantently so its easy to read in the winter without having to press it all the time.

You can also see how many calories burnt, miles ran, total time its taken, each week, which is great incentive, (works from Sunday to Sunday though), do wish that was Monday to Sunday but thats my only gripe.

Overall alot of common sense has gone into this little GPS, its very user friendly & records your work out efforts effortlessly leaving you to get on & enjoy it!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Good while it's working, 30 Mar 2006
By Cliff (Harlow, Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Brought one of these in June 2005. For the first few months worked really well, did loose the signal in wooded areas etc. but generally speaking was good. At the beginning of Mar 2006 the reciever just stopped working, since then have been trying to get in contact with Garmin, sent several e-mails to the customer support (a complete misnomer) with no replies. Cannot send the device to be repaired as require a RMA number which you get from customer support and the only phone number is one in the US.
Bottom line if you are prepared to pay ~£100 for a few months then this is the devise for you, If however it breaks which appears to be a frequent occurance then you might as well just bin it as you ain't going to get any help from Garmin.
