Know what you're getting ...,

This review is from: Garmin Edge 305 (Cadence) Navigation & Trip Computer for Cycles, with Cadence Sensor for Advanced Training (Electronics)
Be aware of what you're buying if you get a Edge 305. Yes it uses GPS, but it's not a satnav. There are ways of getting it to do some navigation for you (various websites exist to help you in this goal), but mostly it's a data logging cycle computer that happens to use GPS to get it's speed / distance figures.
If you're not interested in the data logging, then it's probably *way* over priced! However if you are, then it's great. Press start/stop at the beginning of your ride, press lap at the bottom the mountain and again at the top and bottom and then start/stop when you finish. The recording average speed, max speed, average & maximum cadence & heart rate (if you have those sensors) not only for the entire ride but also for each segment. Probably of most use for either "gadget geeks" or people with several/many bikes.

I use the 305 for cycle touring and its a great piece of kit. Plan your route on line and transfer onto the edge, no need for maps, i was away for 4 days and never had a map with me and was in some pretty remote areas and the 305 worked great. BAttery life i found was around the 10-11hrs, but i would charge up each night with an emergency mobile phone charger with a mini usb port. For the geeks, yes its great then to be able to look at your data once transeferred onot the pc, avg heart rate, avg speed, elevation etc is all available. There is more functionality built into this machine for the serious trainers, but it works great for what i need. It would be easier if it ran from AA's, other than that i wouldnt be without it. Will eventually upgrade to the 705

Issues with this product:
Soon after purchasing it stopped acquiring satellites. The solution was to download software from Garmin and complteley reset the device prompting the question of why wasn't it upto date when sold. Battery life is well short of the advertised 12 hours and seems to be declining rapidly. It's currently about 4 hours. The altimeter gives highly variable readings when being reset. The instruction booklet is outof the dark ages - anyone selling a mobile phone with such a booklet would be laughed out of court.
