Manufacturer's Description

Garmin Approach G5, Golf GPS Touchscreen

Boost your game

Give your game of golf a boost of confidence with Approach G5, a rugged, waterproof, touchscreen golf GPS packed with more than 6,500 preloaded golf course maps. Approach measures individual shot distances, shows exact yardages to fairways, hazards and greens, and much more.

Eliminate the Guesswork

The touchscreen interface helps you decide the best tactic to get that perfect shot and improve your score by showing the precise distance to the green or other key course features. Approach's highly-sensitive GPS receiver pinpoints your position and removes guesswork from your game. As you move, it automatically updates your position, so you'll always know your yardage. Improve your course management with Touch Targeting; Touch any point on the display and Approach G5 shows the precise distance to that exact spot and the subsequent distance to the pin. Knowing your yardage is essential to feel confident laying up or carrying hazards. To check the pin position, simply touch the top corner of the screen and reposition the flag to correspond with the day's placement. In 'Green View' you can also see the accurate shape of the green and the yardages of any green-side hazards. Approach G5 also displays tree lines so you can work out how far it is to carry a dog leg or a tree obstructing your line to the pin. After launching a drive you can measure its distance using the 'Measure Shot' feature for bragging rights back in the bar. Approach G5 enables you to assign every shot measured to a club, providing an accurate list of average yardages per club.

Touch any point on the display and Approach G5 will show the precise distance to that exact spot and the subsequent distance to the pin.

This golf GPS unit is so nearly perfect. It has all the courses I have played on or wished to play on in UK and Ireland, and seems to cover everywhere from Italy to the Arctic. It makes club selection for those difficult shots over hazards a breeze - just go out and measure the real distance you hit each club so you no longer have to guess...
The display is good in brilliant sunshine, the machine is waterproof but...
you cannot see very much in rainy, dull light. Trying to peer at it while wiping the display clear of raindrops results in the touch-sensitive surface thinking you're putting in waypoints, so you have to keep stepping back.
Please fix it, Garmin!

I had this for my birthday and played with it for the first time yesterday. It was a dull, rainy day and I couldn't read the screen. Today was a bright sunny day and we played again in a four ball. None of us could read the screen. It has some excellent features - the touch screen with the ability to indicate a point on the hole you wish to know the distance to is a brilliant idea - but if you can't see the hole well enough to find the point, then it is no use. This is even more annoying because we watched the training videos and sales videos and on all of them the screen seemed bright and clear. It may be that ours is faulty in some way and we are looking into it, but at this moment I would certainly say that the one I have is not of merchantable quality.

We have now cracked the problem and feel that anyone buying this item should know how! The problem lay in the battery setting. As we had used normal AA batteries we set the system accordingly. Unbeknown to us, this puts the system on an auto saving brightness setting - if it didn't, it is doubtful that the unit would last an entire round. If you set it to lythium or rechargeable (even if you are using normal batteries) the screen jumps into action and becomes bright and clear.
We have now bought a charger and a set of rechargeable batteries and hopefully that will solve the problem. It defies logic though, as to why Garmin did not make the unit rechareable as per every other gps/phone/electronic system on the market.

I bought this unit 12 months ago and it is a superb golfer's GPS. The GPS gets a signal reasonably quickly and the list of possible courses is defined by where you are. Nothing special there. The screen is designed to be read in direct sunlight and it does that job extremely well. The screen is backlit and a previous review explains how to maximise backlight brightness. Remember though that on a bright sunny day, the backlight is irrelevant. However, on a grey (rainy) Irish evening... it is useful.

I bought this unit for four specific reasons:
1) This GPS unit takes 2 AA batteries. This is a big thing for me. If I forget to charge the batteries, I simply load up fresh AA batteries. I do NOT have to wait to "charge the unit". Don't underestimate this functionality if you are on a golf holiday and want to play 36 holes per day.

2) Bigger screen size. You can preview golf courses on this device and because the screen is a decent size, looking at the hole layout and planning your approach to the hole is enjoyable.

3) When you are looking at a hole either on the course or in "preview mode" you can pinpoint where you would like to hit a shot. The device will tell how far away the proposed shot is from you and also how far your next shot will be to the green. This is a super facility if you want to layup or if you want to leave yourself the 100m chip. It is a particularly useful feature if you play foursomes.

4) Free Course Updates - for Life. This is a great feature. Simply update your device with the latest course information. If you want Garmin to add a course to their library - they will. If you register with them, they promise to send you a mail advising that there is an update to be loaded on to your GPS.

These things really do help, particularly when you are away from the fairway. Easy to use - rechargeable batteries last at least 2 rounds. Love it.

I bought the Garmin Approach G5 in the summer after previously resisting buying such electronic golf aids. I mainly play golf on the course I am a member of, so know the clubs I need to use.

But, since having this device I've found that has helped my game in a way that I didn't anticipate. One of the key things its helped me with judging the distance of short pitch shots say 30 to 100 yards and hence controlling how much I put into my pitching wedge. I used to under hot or over hit this kind of shot more often than not. All of sudden using this device I am finding I am getting up and down more often than I did before.

It's worth getting the free download to upgrade so that you have the facilities to produce statistics on club distances. You might be surprised on how the averages work out over time and may find you are adjusting club selection slightly as a result too.

There are plenty of courses pre-loaded for those visits elsewhere, although I have found one course missing that I have visited.

I don't find any problem using the device in any light, bright or dull.

I would get the rechargeable batteries for it though as it would eat the standard AA batteries as bad as early digital cameras did. You might just get 3 rounds in on a full charge, but you might be running out of juice before the end of the third round if you risked it.

I was pre-warned about this when I bought the device, so being prepared for this and knowing it will handle rechargeable batteries means that this has never been an issue.

So although I am a late convert to such devices I have made some good use of it and it has helped much more than I anticipated.
