Torn from Her Homeland …
Her Parents Murdered …
How Could She Cope?

When little Hannelore (Hanna) Zack left Cologne, Germany, on a train bound for London as a seven-year-old Mädchen (young girl) on July 24, 1939, she had no way of knowing that she was part of the Kindertransport, an epic rescue effort that would save 10,000 Jewish children from Hitler’s Nazi regime by granting them safe passage to England. In the coming years, Hanna would learn the painful truth: after being stripped of their business, forced from their Zuhause (home), and deported to endure six months of inhumane conditions in the Lodz Ghetto, her parents were gassed in a brutally efficient killing operation in a remote forested area near Chelmno, Poland, on May 3, 1942. Written over a four-year period beginning when Hanna was about seventy-five years old, A Garland for Ashes is both a gripping detective story recounting the heartbreaking process of discovering her family’s fate and a poignant account of her journey from vengeful hatred to forgiveness and release from bitterness.

As I read this well written book it gave the intense feeling. Of the position of Being a Jew at the rise. Of the power of Hitler in Germany.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book 21 Dec 2013
By Thomas Cogdell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just finished reading through A Garland for Ashes, and my eyes are still moist with tears.

In the interest of full disclosure, I know Hanna and her story, and even make a brief appearance in the book. So perhaps I am biased.

However, I also know great literature. I attended St. John's College, where for four years I read the great books of western civilization. One thing I became convinced of was that many of these books came to be considered great, because the author was able to unfold for the reader what it was like to be an ordinary human being - even in the midst of history-changing events.

Hanna succeeds in just this way. This book is as much about her as about the Holocaust. She has researched her own heart, feelings, and thoughts as carefully as she has researched the history of the Rzuchowski Forest. And she shows us what it is to emerge triumphant through the power of reconciliation, when facing the evil within as well as the evil without.

Thank you, Hanna, for this gift to the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars From bitterness to forgiveness 16 Aug 2013
By Georgina Street - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This sweet woman's account of her journey as a 6 year old on one of the last Kindertransports out of Germany through the realization that her parent's had been holocaust victims was very moving. Her writing is beautiful-- filled with meaningful metaphors and her journey into a ministry of understanding, remembrance and forgiveness of the German people is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Frightened Young Girl turns into a Very Beautiful Woman 29 July 2013
By Sue Mapp Harper - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A Garland for Ashes is a MUST READ!!! I got caught up in it immediately, but then some of the horror made me put it down for just a little while. I know this 'little Girl' who is a most beautiful Woman inside and out. So back to the book I went to find out so many things that brought her to this place in her life. There are so many examples in Hanna's
life that show us we should NEVER give up, but always put our TRUST in OUR LORD.
Thanks be to Hanna for writing this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A garland for A Garland 12 Mar 2014
By Megan Comstock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Hanna Miley's story is a story for everyone, and is the true tale of beauty being given for ashes.

It is for anyone whose heart has been shattered, their trust burned through. their confidence and joy, usurped, their ability to cope with life, near extinct.

It is the story of the redemption of the human race through the life, death, and resurrection a Man - coming to know a Life that is beyond our life, the One who is gently calling and sometimes near pushing us to receive Him, to open to Him - in love, for love, for our freedom and true healing.

It is the story of what happens when we are invited to face with courage what we most dread, most fear, and would much rather push aside and not bother with, thank you very much - except we are urged to. Except that we sense there has to be more to life than what we are experiencing.

Hanna's story is the story of my spiritual mother, who at the young age of being a twentysomething decided to put her trust in Jesus. I cannot believe how beautiful she becomes throughout this book - heart-wrenching as her journey is. I cannot believe how beautiful she continues to grow in reality as well - a vibrant, sharp, radiant women whose youthfulness becomes her.

Hanna's story is one that, as it unfolds, invites us to unfold ours as well - our fears, our bitterness, our unforgiveness. And the breath of Life surprises us with its quickness, its keeness to revive, to call forth, to make all things new.

I not only recommend the book, I recommend the woman, the couple that she and George are, and the gift it would be for anyone to be with them. I hope there are many book events and signings to come, that the "leaves" of this book would also be for the healing of the nations.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good insight 4 Mar 2014
By Reva Everett - Published on Amazon.com

I was never a real history buff. Could never remember dates of events or sequences of events. There were no human interest behind the stories. But this book was very well written with heart and soul. Keeps you going as to what happened next and next. You can see the events and places in your imagination.
