Product Description

Product Description

Francois Rabelais (1494-1553) was a French writer whose comic masterpiece, "Gargantua", is one of the most influential works in the Western literary canon. "Gargantua Now" is a version for today's world. Both a parody and a riddling comedy, it is a story of magical reality, starting with the birth and education of the giant Gargantua and ending as a philosophical and psychological commentary on existence. It asks; what is wisdom? And points to the truth beyond labels.

About the Author

Rabelaise has been a healer and coach for the last 21 years. She lives in Kent with her three children, runs a meditation group, has set up a charity, organizes regular workshops at an international level and writes books. One wintry night, she sat bolt upright in bed knowing she had to rewrite 'Gargantua'. The idea has been burgeoning ever since.

Best laugh in ages! 12 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
My daughter and I started to read this book in the dentist's surgery, the other patients did not know what had hit them, riotous laughter bursting out all over the place. Since then I have gone on reading and it only gets better, subtler too, how to deal with an age of chaos, can I be the one to lead all beings to liberation/enlightenment? are some of the questions invoked in passing. Have not finished the book at time of writing, lost my daughter 'en route' to the BFG by another well-known author. Lots of giants running round our house at the moment. Can thoroughly recommend it, great read! Also, knowing nothing about Rabelais or Pantagruel before, would now be tempted to read more...WELL DONE!

Enchanted! 21 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
(This review was written by my mother Mary Essinger who rated the book as four stars.)

'Over Christmas I picked up Gargantua and was enchanted.
It's kids' stuff for grownups with something fresh and quirky on every page,
fun with words, e.g.Mr Played Safe Until Today, fun with lists and dada di dada
yet the writer makes serious observations on the way we live now.
No fuddyduddies should buy it.'

Woh 17 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
It is such an amazing, funny and clever book, that I can summarize it in woh. It is really rabelaisgue - the fusion of high and low humor, the combination unrealistic and realistic elements, It is a real grotesque according to Bakhtin (and I mean it as a compliment).
It is really true to the sprit of Rabelais, yet so modern, and look like what would have been written if Rabelais would live today.
