From Production IG (Psycho Pass, Blood The Last Vampire, Ghost in the Shell) and the Creator of Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero comes an action-packed sci-fi adventure like you've never seen before. While fighting an intense inter-galactic war, a mecha pilot was accidentally warped into a space-time neither he nor the computer of his mecha could recognize. After waking up from a long-time hibernation, he found himself trapped on a planet, with human residents talking in an unknown form of language, using inferior technologies, and -- most shocking to him -- naturally breathable air..

At first glance it is easy to mistake Gargantia for just another shallow CG filled mecha driven mess, as a matter of fact I almost did do just that. Fortunately I stuck it out past the first couple of episodes and quickly discovered that there are a lot of characters worth caring about in this show.

The story follows Ledo, a soldier who has known nothing but battle for most of his life. He fights in space against an alien menace- that is his only purpose... or so it seems until he crash lands on Earth, our now waterlogged home planet. Once there Ledo is stranded and must learn to live a life outside of the war. He of course isn't alone. With Earths remaining humans living their own mostly peaceful ways of life on board the colossal floating boat city Gargantia. Ledo has to adapt and change the way he thinks.

Most of the episodes that follow are fun and light hearted with Ledos almost robotic personality and lack of understanding being the focus of much of the shows humor.

Whilst the show is quite light hearted for the most part there is a much more serious overarching story about the war. There are some quite dark ideas put forward in several very good plot twists. I don't know how everyone else will respond but for me these twists really had a good impact.

The animation and art style for Gargantia are beautiful and even the CG (which I am usually not a fan of) fits in nicely with the way everything looks. The environments in particular are gorgeous (the city of Gargantia is a work of art)

The music is great, setting the mood nicely for the show and voice acting is pretty spot on for both English and Japanese.

If I had to pick some flaws I'd say gargantia would've benefited from being a bit longer.

Shockingly good series, builds a great universe with great characters and someu moments that can really make you feel. Good animation too and the dub is more than decent. Good scifi, worth the money.

Very well made (animation quality and script), great story, just a pity it wasn't longer. No boring episodes and nothing you have worry Granny might see out the corner of her eye.

The 2x bonus episodes are in fact from the story and should have been included rather than being relegated to extras.
