Product Description

Review

The pictures show the gardens in the most beautiful light. (Museum of Garden History magazine )

Russell Page may belong to an earlier generation of designers, but his work and ideas remail fresh and relevant to gardeners and designers today. This book is a handsome reminder of his achievements and a valuable archive in its own right. (Professional Gardener )

A beautifully illustrated book. (Garden )

A welcome reissue. The gardens, many in continental Europe and the US, are/ were of powerful simplicity and sophisitication and are well served by the photography and text. (Ham & High )

Since many of Page's gardens gardens have perished, the book is not a complete catalogue, nor is it a biography, but it does provide a detailed account of Page's life and work, presenting where possible, the best and most representative of the hundreds of gardens he created. The brief chronology, extensive index and comprehensive acknowledgements page would make this a useful tool for scholars, though it's the photographs themselves that prove the greatest tribute to this great designer. (Katie Campbell Art Book )

Product Description

A new edition, completely redesigned and including new photographs, of the classic account of Russell Page’s garden designs.

Perhaps the greatest garden designer of the twentieth century, Russell Page (1906–85) was trained as an artist, and brought an architectural sensibility and a keen eye for style

to the many vast garden projects that he undertook. With the assistance and co-operation of Page’s clients, Schinz and van Zuylen have researched and photographed all of his best work, both early and late, and some now no longer extant. Through his private files and unpublished writing, the man and his work are brought into sharp focus, and over 250 photographs capture the special beauty of his creations in England, America and throughout continental Europe.

Russell Page - An unsung hero 3 Feb 2001
By moss turner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I hadn't even heard of Russell page until I perchanced upon this book in my local bookstore some 5 years ago. I was moved to tears by some of the photographs, and that doesn't happen easily to me. The man was a genius, clear and simple, and his designs reached out and spoke to me in a way very few designers ever have. In my own landscapes, I have been immensely influenced by Russell Page, both through this wonderful book, and his own 'Education of a gardener'. This book is superbly illustrated with colour photographs throughout. The photography is excellent, and the written descriptions are well penned, informative, decriptive but not too long-winded. My copy of this book would be on my list of my top ten material possessions.

No words to describe this genius!.How as a landscape gardener, could I have taken ten years to discover his works!!.He is obviously and sadly unknown for his contribution to timeless gardening. This is the "Bible" of landscape gardening, and he is the Van Gogh of gardeners. How can such a valuble and essential book be unavailable!?

Portrait of a master 6 Jan 2009
By W. Oliver - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Russell Page was perhaps the most successful garden designer of the twentieth century yet sadly many of his masterpieces are no longer in existence. The author and photographer Marina Schinz sought to remedy this after his death by preserving his gardens in photographs and writing this book. First published over fifteen years ago, the book has been reprinted.

Page designed gardens in England, France, Italy and the United States for many famous clients. He was a genius at composing the elements of a landscape, sometimes redirecting waterways and changing elevations to achieve his visions. The gardens featured here are divided by style and place, such as "The Moorish Influence" which discusses the important influence that Islam gardens played on Page's work. The photographs are sumptuous, perfectly capturing the beautiful creations of this master landscape architect.
