Book Description

18 Oct 2001
From window sills and balconies to small town gardens and country estates, vegetable gardens that are both beautiful and productive have their roots in ancient tradition but are as relevant and fresh today as Marylyn Abbott traces the history of the potager around the world and discusses its interpretation by contemporary designers. As well as inspirational photography, there is practical advice on planning, designing and using a potager that is both productive and beautiful, as well as clever advice on making the most of smaller spaces such as patios and containers. A glossary of details gives information on the many decorative and useful aspects that can be incorporated into a potager. This title explores the resurgence of interest in ancient ways of producing natural foods and remedies from herbs, vegetables, fruit and flowers, and reflecting contemporary interest in all things natural, pure and organic. they were a thousand years ago.

Review

....set firmly in the coffee-table class, but on reading it you discover there's some real grit beneath the gloss. -- The Kitchen Garden, November 2001, Just Out by Andrew Blackford

From the Publisher

This fascinating book by Marylyn Abbott traces the history of the potager, from its romantic roots in medieval Europe to its cutting edge interpretations all over the world today. Infinitely flexible this style of garden has absorbed the past 1,000 years of human history and spread to every corner of the globe. It moderates temperature, mazimises space and provides an oasis of sheltered calm. It also affords considerable room for individual expression. Marylyn also celebrates the individuality and quirkiness of potagers from America, Australia, Britian and continental Europe. For the reader inspired by the true spirit of the potager there are ideas to recreate, design pointers and planting tips throughout, that create a mixture of inspirational, yet practical advice to aid the design of a productive and beautiful garden.

3.0 out of 5 stars Potager garden books 9 Sep 2010
By LaRada
Format:Hardcover
This book looks promising for my potager project, but the Joy Larkom book is more down to earth. I don't understand the price tags of £40 and £50 as my used copy has a label of $16.95 - surely it's not that rare. I had expected it would be quit a tome at these prices.

I found this book hugely helpful in designing a larger kitchen garden. I found very few garden design books that were applicable to a large area, that were about current gardens, rather than a history of the potager or kitchen garden. Having said that, there is a lot of useful information in here and ideas that are just as applicable for a single raised bed or even pots, and I find the book a useful partner to Joy Larkom's Creative Vegetable Gardening, which I find very practical, but in terms of design limited to small gardens. There are some really interesting potagers from around the world so a little less predictable than your usual book on vegetable gardening, and some great photography - sunlight through red veined lettuces and satisfying rows of clipped santolina. A useful section at the back on planning and design, but for more detailed information on specific varieties and how to grow - this isn't the book.
