Amazon.co.uk Review

With glorious photography and practical text combining to make this book both beautiful and useful, Gardening Without a Garden is a wonderful title for anyone interested in container gardening. Featured plants range from colourful easy-care annuals to sophisticated succulents and author Gay Search shows her creativity in the selection of all kinds of unusual containers. Helpful for beginners, each plant grouping contains a planting diagram and list of products necessary to achieve the specific look. All styles and price ranges are well represented, and each finished display comes with suggestions regarding space and climate. The special chapter on container care is quite useful, and step-by-step instructions are given for weather proofing all kinds of baskets, barrels and cans.

When it comes to plant care, the instructions are again most worthwhile--from preparing hanging baskets to setting up an irrigation system, the information is presented clearly enough for everyone to feel confident in tackling new projects. The pictures in the section on plant propagation are more useful than any amount of text, as they demonstrate beautifully how to separate seedlings, take root cuttings and divide overgrown herbs. A great first-ever container gardening book for the novice, this book is sure to inspire more seasoned gardeners to experiment with untried plant and pot combinations for a fresh new look. --Jill Lightner

I've been an avid gardener for many years but always had a large yard to work in. We recently moved to an apartment with a small balcony and I realized I faced new challenges in gardening.

This book has fresh and exciting arrangements that are easy to "do yourself." The book discusses form, color, and seasonal interest. Most of the plants used are readily available at garden centers, yet these are no run-of-the-mill arrangements. Alternate plants are suggested for each grouping.

This is simple enough for a beginner and exciting enough for an experienced gardener. The photography is beautiful and the text and layout easy to follow.

I took this book out of the local library and within pages, I knew I was going to buy it for my garden/herb library at home. I was thrilled when Amazon had it for sale. It is totally educational in the ways of what, how and when to plant and includes decorative tips. The illustartions are brillant. A must have gardening and plant information book!

Fantastic ideas and easy-to-follow how-tos that inspire. 24 Jun 1998
By Leslie Stompor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is fun to read and has wonderfully illustrated how-tos that give you the self-confidence to try your hand at painting pots, or setting up a plant screen, or whatever.

Clever ideas are presented as well, such as planting two plants in pots next to each other, where each plant requires very different soil conditions. This way, you can go BEYOND regular gardening by putting plants in containers!!

Also of interest are the illustrations showing how the container could change thoughout the year, or be done in different hues.

Overall, this is a great book to get you started on your very own garden-less garden!!

I hate to give a less than stellar review but this book had nonew information for me. This is not the book for you if you've readother garden books or consider yourself an experienced gardener. Sometimes I just get one tidbit from a book that's useful, that's fine. This book was a real dud for me. END

Inspirational 4 Sep 2001
By SAM GREENBLATT - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Sometimes a book comes along that may be a little less technical but somehow manages to remind you why something is worthwhile. The stunning photographs in this beautiful book have revived my dormant interest in container gardening like an old tulip bulb. This book is a refreshing reminder of the artistry achievable in this most rewarding pursuit. Highly recommended.
