Product Description

This book is a useful addition to the library of those of us with a "postage stamp" for a garden - as seems to be the modern way.

A large glossy paperback, well made with stunning photographs. The book deals with different types of garden, mostly photos with explanations beneath. Then chapters on different plants, everything from trees to bulbs, again photos, with useful hints and comments about companion plants beneath each. Thank heavens nothing about having to put in decking or patios. The featured gardens are chosen generally for their packed and beautiful planting themes, most of which are informal and intimate spaces.

I had this book and so ordered one to be sent to my daughter from Amazon used books. I could hear her sigh when I told her (Not another gardening book) . However she is as delighted as I was, and apparently it looks like a new book. It has already inspired her to reorganise her planting and add more in.

I picked up an almost pristine copy of this book on the secondhand market. It was first published back in the late 1990s and some of the photography and a few of the small gardens do look a little old-fashioned now. Where the book scores well though is in the excellent photography in relation to trees, shrubs & plants. The section on planting for a small garden was very useful, particularly regarding suitable trees. I like also that Hattatt highlights some very worthwhile plants which aren't often used. Overall, therefore, this has been a worthwhile addition to the bookshelves.
