Product Description

You won't have to get up in the middle of the night to sow your carrots! Country folk know that planning their work in harmony with the rhythms of the moon produces better crops. It's that easy. They get higher yields and better flavour in vegetables. Flowers produce stronger displays and heightened colour. This guide computes everything you need to know about the daily influence of the moon and the planets in the garden. With its full 15-month daily calendar, it creates an essential timetable for the year ahead and a fine means of self-discipline for keen gardeners.

About the Author

Nick has a science degree from Cambridge and used to work as a Physics schoolteacher. He is now recognised in the astrological community for his research on planets, plants and metals and has lectured on hermetic subjects since 1975. It was his investigation into lunar effects on plant growth that led to the original Planting by the Moon. Since then he has written the popular annual guide for gardeners

This will be my wife's third year of using this book to assist her biodynamic planting of our fruit and veg. She tried others concurrently, but this has proved to be the most useful for her. It's easy to see at a glance what to plant on any particular day. She hasn't gone to the lengths of planting anything at night - at least not yet - but she does try to plant and tend the various things on the right days. We have noticed a big increase in our crop yield by following the recommendations of this book, even in her light-hearted and relaxed way, and anticipate that taking it more seriously could boost our crops yet further. If you're just beginning to dabble in this, you'll find this book very easy to follow, and it allows you to write notes in each day, so you can tell from one year to the next just what you did when. My wife finds that in the height of summer she can't keep up with all the work outside AND write her notes, but the results are good anyway. Before planting season starts, she goes through her seed packets and, in a space for notes at the beginning of each month, she writes the seeds that can be planted that month. She then checks the days against the list, and makes a sort of planting schedule (in pencil), which often becomes flexible if she's busy at work, but it all works very well.

I've only just started follow this regime and it is not as strict as I thought it would be. If the weather is so bad that I cannot complete a task I check out the calendar to find a suitable day to do it. The planting times for maximising the full potential of the crop are some times a little early for me. It says to plant at the optimum time of 6 am but do it at 9.00.
Gardening by the moon is one thing but gardening in the dark? I think not!

This book is a good introduction to planting by the moon as it contains simple explanations of the principles and a diary showing what sort of plants you should work on for each day of the year. I learned a lot from the first one I bought. However, I've been buying this book religiously over the last several years and, after all this time, I would have expected to see an increase in the information contained in it, not just the same old stuff trotted out year after year. I wouldn't mind so much if you could buy just the diary section annually, and not pay again for the repeat of the entire intro and background section, which never seems to change by as much as a word as far as I can tell - no recent research finding, no extra details, nothing. I've also found several discrepancies in the diary entries that defy the introductory explanations about sticking to certain types of crops on certain days - like suggesting you sow a root plant on a leaf day, which I just can't understand - again no explanation. And why not include both moon rise and moon set times for each day instead of only one or the other, to give the optimum choice. I'd like to see more suggestions in the empty diary pages as to what you could be thinking about planting or tending to on each day - these have dwindled to hardly any advice at all, just the odd reference to specific types of plants - it's so erratic that it all seems rather random. I'm still buying this each year just for the diary section but I am now looking for something better as I can probably find a moon planting diary on the Internet for nothing. I've already found good sites for moon phases etc.

I think it's time Nick Kollerstrom did a major rewrite - he's starting to look far too lazy for what the book's costing me every year. This will be my last copy unless it changes. That's why I'm marking it down to three stars, although before would have given it four. If this is your first time in moon planting it's worth giving this book a go as it makes things so easy to grasp - but if you are more experienced I am sure there are better books out there on the topic.
