Book Description

5 Feb 1998
Ornamental grasses are among the most important plants used by garden designers. This book shows how to use them to transform a garden.

Grasses lend an architectural quality to a garden; they provide texture, background interest and a year-round range of subtle colours. They are also highly versatile, hardy and reliable. Many are evergreen and some perform better in shade, particularly useful in awkward corners where other plants struggle. The distinctive appearance of grasses makes them invaluable in combinations with flowering annuals or textured perennials.

A catalogue of over 150 varieties and cultivars gives details of the best ornamental grasses, sedges and bamboos for a wide range of garden situations.

About the Author

Michael King is a distinguished garden designer, writer and photographer. He has contributed many articles to magazines for both amateur gardeners and professional landscape architects. Recurring themes are planting design and the role of contemporary gardens in society.

Piet Oudolf is a native of Holland and originally studied to be an architect. Instead of designing buildings he became the founder of New Wave planting, a movement which takes inspiration from nature but employs artistic skill in creating planting schemes. As a plantsman, his aim is to emphasize the form, texture, and natural harmony of plants, and as a skilled plant breeder, he creates new varieties for these and other design purposes. He has designed gardens in Holland and Germany, and a public park in Sweden. The garden he designed with Arne Maynard for the Chelsea 2000 Flower Show won the Best Garden Award. His own garden and nursery near Arnhem, Holland, has become world-famous.

The gorgeous photos in this book are all that is needed toa convince us that we have negelcted this group of plants in our gardends for too long. The pictures are backed up with very informative and well written text, including many charts showing companion plants and plants for specific sites and conditions. There is a catalog of the authors' recommended species and cultivars. It includes USDA zone information for U.S. gardeners. Hopefully this volume will encourage plant suppliers to offer more of these fine plants, including the wonderful cultivars selected by Piet Oudolf.

Good book for inspiration and designing borders using grasses and companion planting. Gives scope for all year round garden interest, with good and informative descriptions of a wide variety of grasses. A huge range of uses of grasses is covered from conventional lawns to prairie planting and meadows. But this book is not just about grass! Good photographs and interesting (non-rambling) text. Easy to follow from cover to cover and also great for dipping in and out of. A book for the beginner and seasoned gardener and one of the best books on gardening I have.

Whilst well written and presented, for my purposes this book was rather too broad in its coverage of the use of grasses in domestic gardens. I needed something more targetted to my needs.
