Amazon.co.uk Review

Another wonderful title in this series, dealing with plants for a specific area, this time the patio--be it in tubs, window boxes, troughs, hanging baskets, pots, or raised beds--enabling the patio to be appreciated whatever the season.

The layout is very attractive, making it a pleasure to use. Questions are easily answered, eg: How large will the plants grow? What conditions do they need for them to flourish? What sort of compost is suitable? How much water is required? etc etc, which leads to informed choices cutting out any guess work, thereby saving time, effort and money.

Sue Fisher began writing in 1990 after following a gardening career in the nursery and garden centre industry. She has contributed many articles for well-known magazines and has written several books. She has also appeared on a number of TV programmes and is a radio phone-in regular.

The introductory section of this book advises on different ways of planting and grouping containers, how to plant hanging baskets, how to take cuttings, etc. It is followed by a comprehensive A to Z of patio plants, containing beautiful photographs of all the 500 species. Symbols are used for easy and quick reference. Exciting, inspiring, brilliant, magnificent, outstanding--just some of the superlatives to describe this book. A reference book which every patio owner should possess.

Other titles in this series include The Gardening Which? Guide to Successful Shrubs, The Gardening Which? Guide to Successful Pruning, The Gardening Which? Guide to Successful Propagation The Gardening Which? Guide to Successful Perennials, and The Gardening Which? Guide to Small Gardens. --Susan Naylor

4.0 out of 5 stars Well laid out, easy to use, full of ideas & beautiful photos, 10 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: "Gardening Which?" Guide to Patio and Container Plants ("Which?" Consumer Guides) (Hardcover)
I have a dog who insists on trampling through my borders and annihilating the few herbaceous plants I have. Not wanting another summer without colour, I thought I'd try placing some containers amongst my shrubs to provide bursts of colour. Requiring some assistance I ordered this book. The book is very well laid out divided into catagories such as annuals, bulbs, climbers, shrubs etc. Each section is in alphabetical order and with each planting suggestion there are easy to follow symbols depicting size shape, position, suitable containers, care, flowering period etc., and of course the essential beautiful photo. Being a relatively novice gardener, I started with the easy maintenance suggestions and have had 100% success so far. I can't wait to plant some tubs full of bulbs, for an early spring display, and look forward to giving container fruit & veg a go next year. The only criticism I have is that some of plants suggested are not easily available. Overall have found this book extremely useful and a joy to own
