Although I know a little bit about gardening you can never remember everything, this book is great, it explains how to do various things - seeding, taking cuttings, problems etc. I found found it very useful and would recommend this book to anyone who is not an expert

5.0 out of 5 stars An idiots guide..... 5 Aug 2010
By Hedge
Bought this to teach me the basics as I really needed to sort the garden out. Lots of simple explanations on soil types, plant types (annuals, perenials etc) and answered lots of questions. It is American so lots of reference to their seasons and climate relative to South and North America but the sentiment is the same. Has basic sections on Roses, dealing with pests etc but the book mainly covers the basics of working in the garden. Really helped me and still refer to it when I get stuck.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for the beginner 11 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is perfect for the first time gardener! Took a little longer than I expected for it to arrive (6 days). This was a birthday gift and did not arrive until day after birthday. Other than that, I was very satisfied.

2.0 out of 5 stars What do they think we are? Dummies!! 22 April 2010
Bought this book as a gift for my son who seems to have found where his garden is in recent years. Wasn't sure about this but my husband said our son would like the format. Must admit that on receipt of the book my worst fears surfaced - big paperback with few pictures if any; rather heavy on lists and bullet points; not a lot of "your garden can look like this" type advice. On the (birth)day son did seem quite surprised and happy with his gift - he's used quite a few brooks from the "...for Dummies" series and was familiar with the format so hopefully he is more positive about it than I was. We'll be interested to see the results - next year perhaps?

5.0 out of 5 stars Gardening Basics for Dummies 22 Feb 2007
By Charlie Nardozzi - Published on
If you're looking to start gardening or to update your current knowledge about gardening, this book is the place to start. Steve Frowine makes the gardening information accessible, practical and fun. Like all the ...for Dummies books, I particularly like the no-nonsense way he describes some fundamental gardening tasks like planting a tree or creating a flower bed. This book covers all the basics such as vegetable and fruit gardening, herb gardening, flower gardening, landscaping with trees and shrubs, growing bulbs, container gardening and even gardening projects with kids.

But it's also good for a more experienced gardener. There's a detailed chapter on building and water gardens and raising fish and some quick, handy gardening projects to do.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is not for the braindead gardner 7 Mar 2011

I killed a cactus. This book is not designed to fix that kind of stupid. It gives some basics, but not quick and easy tricks. It expects you to know something. I got more help from internet research.

I recently purchased a new home and it needs a lot of landscaping (flowering/beds). I even found a section on staking poles for trees and vines - very pleased.
