I'll make this short. These essays are simply the best ever about the act of gardening and the gardeners themselves. Anyone who has ever tended a garden for any length of time will immediately relate to the situations and the people in these writings. They are humorous as well as accurate. You'll laugh at yourself and your friends through these wonderfull essays.

This is my favourite book ever. The one I return to time and time again, the one I read every Spring, and the one which I have bought for all my friends who have ever expressed half an interest in gardening. I cannot recommend it too highly to anyone who has a fascination with plants and a gentle sense of humour. Incomparable.

Czech writer Capek is likely to be remembered as the inventor of the word 'robot' as much as for his literary works, and it is to society's detriment, as this collection of essays on gardening amply illustrates. Accompanied by the original drawings from his brother Josef, Capek's vignettes on the wonders, and the chores, of having a garden to tend are perfect examples of his dry yet gentle humour, and would make the perfect gift for even the most apathetic gardener.
