Book Description

Over two years the professionals at Gardeners' World created a series of beautiful flower gardens from a disused playing field in Birmingham. Here Toby Buckland reveals how you can adopt the tried and tested methods used at Gardeners' World to create your own year-round flower garden in this beautifully illustrated guide to the flower gardens at Greenacre.

Split into achievable front and back garden plots, the Greenacre gardens accommodate a range of garden designs, aspects and plant-types, from a luscious twilight garden for evening scent and nectar-filled bee border to attract beneficial wildlife, to a hardy coastal garden to show what you can do with very dry soil. Toby talks through the concept, planting and maintenance requirements of each garden, describing every flower in full and assessing the environmental benefits of each one. And he expertly demonstrates how to make bespoke garden features, such as cobble paths and bee boxes.

Filled with stunning flower photography and expert garden advice, this inspirational and practical book is the culmination of two years of gardening at Greenacre and enables lovers of flowers to bring a little of the Gardeners' World magic to their own gardens.

This book makes you feel Toby is standing beside you, guiding you through eleven creative ideas from Greenacre in your own garden. His refreshing style encompasses a whole year's worth of practical, no nonsense advice that gets results. The gorgeous planting and wonderful photos are a taster of the summer to come and there are loads of really helpful tips, including the one that saved me from disposing of a Plumbago on p218! Out in time to plant up for this summer, I am looking forward to reaping the rewards from using Toby's knowhow in my own garden.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical & beautiful 23 Oct. 2014
By Marand TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I really like this book which showcases the flower borders at the Gardeners' World garden, Greenacre. After an introductory chapter covering such issues as soil improvement, types & uses of fertiliser, techniques such as staking, the following chapters look at individual borders/planting areas. Each garden merits a planting plan together with details of the chosen plants and, most usefully, a seasonal maintenance regime. I particularly love the largely white flowered Twilight Garden, the Bee Border and the Scented Front Garden but you will find ideas for woodland gardens, coastal gardens, a prairie planting scheme, a meadow, and an exotic garden. On the first page of each section it sets out core information indicating the size of the border, maintenance rating, ideal location, etc..

Buckland's prose style is clear, precise and charmingly evocative of the plants & flowers that his green-fingers have lovingly tended.

This BBC programme (GARDENERS' WORLD) tie-in book is a definitive account of the programme's Birmingham-based garden (Green Acre) as it was cultivated by Buckland and the GW Team. Each chapter covers a different soil type or location (say, dry shade) to ensure that it is comprehensive for any reader planning their own garden.

The photography is superbly presented; a confection of colour. The text is written without too much 'flourish', focussing on the practical exercise of planning, cultivation and maintenance.
