Book Description

17 Mar 2005 Gardeners' World

Gardening from Berryfields is an invaluable book for gardeners of all levels and, in particular, to the viewers of BBC2's Gardeners' World.

Using the main projects undertaken at Berryfields (the Gardeners' World garden) the book guides the reader through a year of gardening, giving practical advice so that they can use Berryfields as a template for managing their own garden.

Now available in paperback, the book cleverly distills all the information that is packed into each episode of Gardeners' World and draws on the immense horticultural experience of Monty Don, the show's main presenter.

The book is divided into 13 chapters covering subjects such as the kitchen garden, courtyard garden, dry garden, herb garden, mixed borders, pond, orchard, and wildflower meadow.

Monty Don is a gardening columnist with the Observer, has presented several gardening programmes and has written numerous books on the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Monty - always worth the money! 12 Feb 2006
By Myrtle
As a fan of Monty Don's writing and gardening I bought this, expecting that his style had probably been watered down (no pun intended!) for Gardeners World viewers. But not a bit of it. Monty happily gives us the low down on junk fruit and other evils of the twenty-first century. Entertaining and informative it is based around the Berryfield plot, so the chapters include the £20 border, the greenhouse, the kitchen garden, the pond, the lawn, the fruit garden and so on. Well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars No worries at 1p! 23 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
As title, I bought this for 1p (exc. P&P) and it arrived in close to 'as new' condition. Of course, with the BBC having long moved on from Berryfields, this could be regarded as an anachronistic book.

However, Monty has written the book as chapters featuring the main "mini gardens" from the programme plus the veg plot and the greenhouse. Only the 'pond' chapter is specific to the location. The other chapters all contain planting lists, notes on plant care and propagation and seasonal advice which are useful. Of course, being written by Monty you know weed control won't be copious use of Round Up! TBH I think Monty is a better writer than presenter, and there is nothing here to alarm the beginner with Latin names

Of course, there is going to be something 'lost' in that you can't both read about and watch the garden's development. That said, if you are wanting a decent guide to creating borders, dry garden, spring garden, veg plot etc. then the book still has value.
