OK but not comprehensive enough,

This review is from: Gardeners' World: Pests and Diseases (Paperback)
The Gardeners' World £4.99 series provides a lot of information packed into a small volume and at a reasonable price and this one is no exception. However, the topic of garden pests and diseases is a large one and I think in this instance it falls short of being really useful to the amateur gardener. There are two main reasons why this is. Firstly it's a book of two distinct halves, dealing with both good cultivation/prevention measures followed by identification and treatment once the pest or disease has struck. There's nothing wrong with this approach and I particularly like the various projects found in the former section, such as how to make your own sticky insect traps. However, I believe someone wanting to use this book is more likely to pick it up when they have a problem rather than starting out with good horticultural practice. A number of common pests and diseases are featured, but this in turn highlights the second weakness: your problem isn't necessarily one of those featured and there aren't enough accompanying photographs to help with identification. Quite a few just rely on a description alone. This simply isn't good enough when you're encountering a problem for the first time. Both organic and chemical treatments are given where applicable on the whole which is good , though I did notice the nematode treatment available for wine weevils wasn't mentioned which many of my gardening friends use as their treatment of choice. It's a good introduction to the subject, but any keen gardener will probably move on quickly to other, more detailed volumes such as those produced by the RHS.
