Product Description

Review

What better way for a gardener to relax on a Sunday afternoon than with a cup of tea and the radio tuned into Radio 4's perennial favourite, Gardener's Question Time? Travelling the length and breadth of the country with occasional forays abroad, the Gardener's Question Time team are faced with a weekly barrage of questions ranging from the usual pests and diseases to the more challenging of what to grow where. One of the regular features of programme is "Plant of the Week" and it is on this popular section that this lavishly illustrated book is based. Four of the regular panellists - Bob Flowerdew, Bunny Guinness, John Cushnie and Matthew Biggs - choose more than 750 species on a month-by-month basis to give a wonderful selection of trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and more with which to add interest to your garden no matter what the season. Each selection is written by one panellist with detailed descriptions, cultivation advice and personal experience accompanied by clearly photographs. The writings reflect the panellist's own individual styles and are occasionally accompanied by comments from one of the others making this not only an informative read but an enjoyable one too. From John Cushnie's tongue-in-cheek asides to Bob Flowerdew's well-known organics, from Matthew Biggs' ornamental plant passion to Bunny Guinness' delight in cottage gardens, their radio personalities transcend the conversion to the printed word. So for those days in-between Gardener's Question Time, and during inclement weather, capture the magic of the panellist's often hilarious discourses with their recommendations for good, garden-worthy plants. - Lucy Watson --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

more than a reference guide. The passion and humour of the radio programme shines through --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This book has got it all. Some really good photographs and really easy to understand details about all the plants that are featured. What I like about it best of all is the way the authors' experience and opinions come through. You really get the feeling that the writers are writing from actual experience rather than producing a theoretical reference book.

I am not a regular listener to Gardener's Question Time but I do hear it on Sunday lunch times from time to time. Whe i read bits of the book, it was just like listening to the radio, I could "hear" the voices and just like on the radio, they don't always agree.

Plant Chooser has introduced me to some plants I would never have thought of before, and can't wait to try out. It's also solved my Christmas present problem for friends and relatives who are keen gardeners.

As a British Expat living in New Zealand I picked up this book at the library with not great expectations. Well what an amazing suprise, it dealt with a great variety of plants from perennials, shrubs, trees, fruit etc. etc. Bob Flowerdew recommends 'vines' a wee bit too much but I can forgive him. I spent many an evening devouring this lovely book with fantastic descriptions of just why a specific plant is so great, for most of their descriptions where I shared a plant they had chosen the writers were spot on. I now have a long list of new plants that I will try and source here in Christchurch, NZ. Thank you, thank you, thank you I will now go and buy a copy for not only me but my mother and mother-in-law. THIS IS A SPECIAL BOOK CANNOT RECOMMEND IT MORE HIGHLY. P.S. My Chatham Island Forget-me-knot is huge after the first season - Matt will be annoyed!

I'm completely enchanted by this book - I've never seen so many beautiful pictures in one volume, nor read such lively accounts of really useful plants. It's got all the fun of the Gardeners' Question Time radio programme about it - the authors tell you WHY they love the plant, not just what bit of the garden it's right for. Matthew Biggs's description of blueberries ('Stand aside, strawberries, your reign is over; all hail, blueberries, king of summer fruit!') made me laugh out loud, which is not something that often happens with a gardening book. And thanks to John Cushnie I know exactly which jasmine I am going to plant against my garden wall next spring. I defy anyone with a gap or a problem area in their garden not to find the right plant from this book.
