Review

He talks with reassuring simplicity on such basic yet essential matters as light saturation, tones and colour distribution, so that newcomers to gardening, as well as old hands, will find themselves understanding the huge and potentially complex subject of colour in the garden. This is a constructive book, and beautiful, too (Hortus )

as well thought out and thorough as it is possible such a book to be ... but of course, it is the big photographs in the book that make it special. And not just because some of them are captivatingly beautiful, but because they are all organically related to the text (Oldie )

With most gardening books I'm too tempted to skim the text in favour of the pictures - not so with this informative and easy to understand guide to colour theory in the garden.

I originally bought the book because of the outstandingly beautiful photographs showing flower borders skillfully and tastefully schemed within the different colours of the spectrum and some that mix and match as well.

Many of the photos are reproduced in line drawings at the back of the book showing clearly how one might reproduce the effect oneself.

However if you have ever been fed up or just switched off at the theory of how to acheive a borders like these this may be the book for you - dealing as it does with the colour wheel, colour saturation, shape and texture and the most striking aspect for me, the mixture of light and dark tones. This was demonstrated by a photo of a green and gold garden and one entirely composed of red plants. When shown in black and white the differance in tonal range was striking.

Any garden lover will not fail to be engaged by the beauty of this book, but those of you to whom colour scheming was until now just a mystery will learn much once you have finished drooling over the photos!

I first discovered this book in the dentist's waiting room - I was anticipating one of those glossy-all-pictures-but-no-useful-contant gardening books - I was wrong. I even stopped to read more after I'd had my appointment! I then borrowed it from the RHS library thinking I could absorb it's advice without having to actually make a purchase but I couldn't. The book is by my bedside or on the coffee table - frequently flicked through for inspiration or read for detailed information on particular plants. It also contains general advice on colour planting - what definitely works and what is best avoided or used with care. It eclipses the RHS Encyclopedia of Planting Combinations, which although useful, isn't inspirational.

Many books try to deal with colour in the garden - this book does. The colour wheel is a very familiar concept but the sections on intensity and tone are really excellent. This book benefits by being written by a photographer (who is also a gardener) as he sees gardens and colour with a finely focused eye. His comments are very useful and give a much wider view of colour than most books. The photos are excellent and very helpful. The range of plants and intensity of colour in each range is very helpful. You will see your garden very differently when you have read this book. I strongly recommend it for normal gardeners like me (i.e. enthusiastic amateurs) but it should be a must for garden designers.
